Purpose

The Center for Transportation Research (CTR) is seeking an Engineering Scientist Associate to join an enthusiastic and growing team of multidisciplinary scientists and programmers who are looking to make an impact in improving our transportation systems. The new hire will enable the work of CTR researchers, graduate and undergraduate students by supporting information technology (IT) activities needed to maintain our computing systems and software engines and by deploying data analysis and processing tools for their access by third parties.

Responsibilities

Support IT activities such as developing software containers, leveraging public or commercial cloud computing services, and managing databases.

Support researchers in the use of emerging data sources, the implementation of efficient data workflows, and the use of data analysis and management tools developed/adopted by CTR and its partners. This includes serving as an instructor/presenter/representative at workshops, conferences, or courses; making contributions to training materials and documentation; resolving user requests for assistance.

Contributing to the development and deployment of data models and advanced computation workflows to support research.

Support researchers in the development and deployment of production-level software tools as needed.

Document and disseminate work by conducting tasks such as maintaining a public resource of developed materials (e.g. source code, documentation); contributing to dissemination efforts led by others.

Provide technical contributions to projects, which includes: serving as the technical lead for projects, project functional areas, or specific project tasks; providing technical leadership in domain-specific challenges faced by group projects; supporting domain-specific challenges faced by group projects; and develop technical skills in areas of current/anticipated project needs.

Sustain external projects, which includes: serving in leadership roles on externally funded projects; identifying and developing applications for new projects; and assisting with the development of proposals.

Potentially assisting with the development of proposals and participate in team authorship of peer-reviewed manuscripts, conference papers, posters, and/or presentations.

Required Qualifications

BS in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, etc.; or at least 4 years of related work experience;

Applied programming experience, including Python, R, C++, JavaScript, MATLAB, and/or SQL stored procedures.

Experience working in a Linux/UNIX command line environment including basic shell scripting

Experience with source control systems (e.g. Git).

Ability to communicate clearly and empathetically to deliver technical training and professional presentations

Strong interest in engaging and empowering researchers

Strong interest in enabling open, reproducible research

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

Demonstrated ability to work and meet deadlines independently and as a member of a team

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Code implementation using Python

SQL database design and querying

Data wrangling and visualization

Research experience leveraging technology with civil engineering/transportation applications

Experience developing software for and using high performance computing

Networking and hardware interfacing for IoT/edge computing

Applied statistics and analysis experience

Research experience developing and using AI/ML/DL methods

Involvement in scientific communities

Experience with software carpentry and/or data carpentry

Experience writing grant proposals

Active leadership in funded research

Salary Range

$90,000 + depending on qualifications
