This posting is for an Engineering Technician I (entry-level) position located in the District 1 Office. This position will assist engineers and higher-level technicians in the implementation and administration of roadway and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors. Responsibilities of this position will include assisting on projects categorized from minor to complex, providing inspection of every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner, and conducting routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standard, codes, permits, and specifications. Daily duties will include calculations, computation, and computer/iPad data entry.
This position serves the District 1 office by working with counties, municipalities, contractors, and field support personnel as the permitting technician to establish compliance with applicable engineering standards and guidelines. Position assists with plan review for subdivisions, utility installations, roadway improvements, and preparing cost estimates. Position will process permits, including driveway, utility and non-utility encroachment agreements, road additions and abandonments, and other records and reports assigned.

Additional Expectations
Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. Candidate should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, on any assigned project within the Division. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
