This intermediate-level position in the Asheville Resident Engineer’s office serves as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects, supporting higher level technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts. Position is responsible for monitoring the contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications. Specific duties will include but are not limited to observing and documenting the contractor’s operations, making measurements and calculations of pay quantities, and performing standardized material sampling and testing. Employees in this position may be expected to either work independently or as part of a larger team of Department employees and consultant inspectors. Position will also ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements. Employees must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Employees will be expected to apply math skills such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Employees will need close visual acuity to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components. Employees may be expected to exercise limited decision making and judgement. Employee will be expected to apply Department safety standards and program to operations. Workers may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic. Employees will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions. Employees will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and be able to lift 50 pounds. Employees may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required for any assigned project in Division 13. Duties involve operating a state-owned vehicle in the daily performance of duties. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position.
