Description of Work

This position serves as lead project inspector for smaller roadway, structure projects, and/or more complex projects, conducting independent inspections on various construction operations using plans, contracts, standards, specifications, etc., and a variety of material testing devices to ensure compliance with project requirements. This position maintains appropriate project records/reports. The employee will supervise, train lower-level technicians, and perform necessary surveying and inspection calculations. Duties also involve familiarization with reading plans, contracts, specifications, and applicable standards. The employee will perform a variety of office assignments such as checking pay records, haul tickets, force account, contractor’s payroll, materials received, and estimates with use of calculator, iPad, and computer. The employee may be assigned to surveying duties, roadway inspection, or bridge projects, all in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

+ Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications
+ Demonstrated ability supervising the work of lower-level technicians in order to obtain desired results
+ Demonstrated ability to lead co-workers on assigned tasks
Additional Expectations: Applicant will have to operate a motor vehicle. Employee will need to have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments, to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements and to inspect roadway and structure components. Applicant must have the ability to perform entry level technical work in a specific materials area or perform sampling, testing, and inspection duties to determine specifications. Employee may be exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over traffic or water, and must climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. Employee will be expected to work outside in various types of weather, terrain, and hours. Applicant must be able to attend and pass certifications for various sampling and testing classes and will have to obtain and maintain QMS Asphalt and Concrete Testing Certifications.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
