The employee in this position must be able to serve as Survey Party Chief for the following duties. Duties include performing preliminary field surveys including topographical terrain modeling, boundary location, utility location and perform property deed search and processing raw data files for importing into Geopak for mapping. This position also performs highway construction stakeout duties including edge of pavement stakeout, drainage stakeout, slope staking, finish pavement grades, curb & gutter stakeout, monolithic island layout, mast arm footings and proposed right of way monuments and applicable easements. Other responsibilities include calculating and setting up road templates using Data collectors, performing GPS control surveys using Trimble equipment, reviewing and checking work performed by technicians, private engineering firms, and other NCDOT units, reviewing roadway plans by private engineering firms for coordinate geometry accuracy, check typical sections, and R/W offsets, scheduling and prioritizing workload with minimal supervision and resolving design issues by determining possible solutions and consulting with the Engineer. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Experience using surveying equipment, instruments, levels, data collectors and GPS equipment + Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans + Experience in performing highway construction stakeouts + Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex surveying + Computer experience including office software and drafting software Additional Expectations: The employee must apply department safety programs to operations. Needs the ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards present on construction sites including traffic, heights, weather extremes, and traversing rough/uneven terrain. The employee must be able to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both orally and in writing. Needs the ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement is necessary. The employee must have proficiency using computers and electronic tablets in the record keeping of field data. A general knowledge of surveying methods and procedures is preferred. The employee must be able to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing and inspection duties. Work may include duties and responsibilities as assigned. The employee may be required to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary. Safety toe shoes are needed. Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
