Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities. The Colorado Natural Heritage Program ( CNHP ) is Colorado’s primary biological conservation information center housed within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. CNHP is a key player in Colorado’s conservation of open lands and maintains the only centralized conservation database in Colorado that includes plants, animals, and natural communities. The staff consists of approximately 40 highly experienced biologists and information managers with expertise in inventory, research, and monitoring of Colorado’s flora, fauna, plant communities, and conservation issues. CNHP serves a wide variety of users including federal, state and local agencies, consultants, environmental groups, non-government organizations, private landowners, and the public. CNHP’s annual revenue is approximately 6 million dollars and is generated from contracts and agreements through CNHP’s partners and clients. CNHP generally works on over 50 conservation projects per year. Position Summary The Entomologist will be responsible for implementing and coordinating inventory and research projects related to the conservation of rare insect and invertebrate species in Colorado. The Entomologist will work with staff from CNHP , NatureServe, and the Natural Heritage Network to rank and develop species of concern lists for invertebrate groups in Colorado and curate data for those invertebrates in CNHP’s Biotics Database. The Entomologist will participate in fundraising and management of insect related projects. The Entomologist will design, develop, analyze, and report on research projects that relate to specific topics related to their expertise. The Entomologist will also serve as the curator of the Colorado Rare Insect Collection, a subsidiary collection of the C. P. Gillette Arthropod Diversity Museum. The Entomologist will serve as the Colorado Natural Heritage Program liaison to NatureServe and the Natural Heritage Network, and the Entomology Department at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Other duties include responding to information requests by staff and outside organizations, teaching insect courses during the fall and spring academic terms, assisting staff with research or statistical needs, field training, delivering public outreach presentations, and relationship building. In addition, this job requires skills at developing research questions, designing study methods, and analyzing datasets in statistical programs such as R. This position also requires skills in identifying Colorado insects, invertebrates, and some experience with identifying native plants. Project management duties also include grant/proposal writing. The scientific reports generated from project research include natural history notes and management recommendations based on the principles and concepts of wildlife ecology and conservation. The Entomologist will be based in Fort Collins, CO. Some responsibilities of this position include: + Develop and maintain lists of invertebrates of conservation concern for species in Colorado. + Plan and conduct surveys and research on the conservation of rare species in Colorado. + Update CNHP Biotics database with information collected on rare species throughout Colorado, especially those data related to species of interest and expertise. + Develop a research program on a taxonomic group or insect biology in Colorado, or other topics of expertise, and initiate projects and funding that support that research. + Recruit, hire and supervise temporary staff, work-studies, and volunteers to complete project work as needed. + Develop ideas for publications, work with sponsors on publications, analyze data, write and submit papers. + Secure funding for teaching insect courses and offering insect courses during the fall and spring academic terms. + Represent CNHP at local and national meetings regarding rare insect conservation and make presentations of applicable research projects. + Facilitate information exchanges with NatureServe and other partners to update rare species. + Build and maintain a professional working relationships with Colorado State University faculty and staff, Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Pollinator Coordinator, as well as outside agencies including the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Colorado Master Naturalists, Colorado extension offices, and state and federal agencies. + Develop and participate in community outreach by delivering public lecture series, leading natural history walks, and engaging with local governments and natural area programs. + Other duties as assigned. Required Job Qualifications + B.S. or B.A. degree in botany, ecology, natural resources, range management, forestry, engineering or related field and 5 years of related professional experience OR M.S. degree in the same fields and 2 years of related professional experience. + Demonstrated knowledge of entomological inventory methods and experience collecting various type of insects. + Experience using dichotomous entomological keys and field guides and familiarity with the major insect families. + Experience interpreting aerial photography (e.g., Google Earth), navigating with a topographic map, and use of GPS . + Experience with various statistical analysis software (PC- ORD , R, SPSS , SAS ). + Experience with MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Access. Experience with ArcGIS and associated mapping applications. + Willingness to initiate contacts with private landowners, State and Federal Agencies and a demeanor that will facilitate this contact. + Willingness and ability to work long hours and unusual schedules, travel during the field season, share living quarters in rustic field housing, bunkhouses, and car camping, and potentially backpack and hike long distances (up to 10 miles / day) while carrying a heavy pack (up to 40 lbs). + Willingness and ability to work with a positive attitude in field conditions that include exposure to inclement weather, rugged terrain, hot or cold weather (30–110° F), mosquitos, and poisonous plants, all while maintaining a strong commitment to team safety. + Demonstrated organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills; ability to handle complex tasks with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. + Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and to maintain effective working relationships. + Ability to work both independently with guidance and effectively in a team. + Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. + The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CNHP will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
