Must be willing to do out of town field work in the Panhandle, which would be either 1 night overnight stay/week or 2 days of driving 4 hours each way (depending on what Duke approves). Driving would be either company vehicle or mileage reimbursement. The field work will heavy for the next year. They will field their own projects and then do their own designs in the office.
We are seeking Junior Level Distribution Engineers to join our team in Florida. You will support power distribution infrastructure upgrades and storm hardening projects across the state. Your work will include engineering calculations and design for replacing deteriorated cables, moving overhead lines underground, reconductoring existing distribution lines, and replacing aging equipment. This role involves a combination of office-based design work and field work, including site visits, visual inspections, and field reports.
ResponsibilitiesConduct site visits and take field notes, including visual inspection, equipment inventory, measurements, sketches, photographs, and field conditions. Compare field data to base plans.Evaluate loading of various equipment components being installed, such as transformers and structural loading of poles, to ensure a cost-effective, safe, and reliable design utilizing client specifications.Review and interpret design manuals and details from local jurisdictions.Determine and specify design requirements.Perform electric distribution designs using field notes, per the Utility’s standards. Design and draft construction drawings using standard engineering fundamentals for approval by Federal, state, and local agencies.Prepare projects and job packages using appropriate software, including material estimates and material requisitions of the materials required for the prepared distribution electrical designs.Review plans for proposed construction to determine impacts on the existing distribution systems.Develop solutions to existing conductor and structural clearance violations and issues.Develop final design plan packages for the implementation of the proposed solution.Ensure projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements.Attend bi-weekly (or more frequently as necessary) meetings with the project team on all projects/tasks.Essential SkillsGraduation from a four-year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.Hands-on design/engineering experience.Basic knowledge of concepts in the electric utility industry, including primary and secondary distribution systems, utility standards, and general construction knowledge and aptitude.Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing/presenting recommendations.Good written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate frequently with customers.Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation/initiative, and the desire to learn.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience on the energy system, performing distribution design.Experience interacting with customers and developers for distribution projects.Current knowledge of BOUD/Maximo, Smallworld, and Microstation.EIT/Passed Engineering Fundamentals Exam.Excellent customer service skills and experience preferred.Work EnvironmentWork is performed at our Riverview office, with flexibility to work from home on occasion after approximately 6 months of training and proficiency. Our Tampa office is a new 19,000 sq. ft. space with a foosball table and shuffleboard, providing a great environment with a positive leader and engaged team. There is also an opportunity to move to our new office in Clearwater after the first 6 months.
