Environmental Department Manager

Job Description
Terracon is seeking a Department Manager to lead and grow our Environmental Consulting practice in the Kansas City metropolitan area. This position offers a unique opportunity to join our talented leadership team based in Lenexa, Kansas and lead an established group of environmental practitioners covering multiple disciplines. This position offers a unique opportunity for an individual who is strong in client and business development, team building and mentoring, business operations management, and strategic planning and implementation. This position will work closely with the Office Manager, Regional Manager, and Environmental Service Line leadership to strategically expand and elevate the practice in the region.

General Responsibilities:
Supervise teams to ensure that work is executed on time and in a manner that provides a positive client experience. Supervise the preparation of proposals and cost estimates to ensure proper scoping of services, availability of resources, and pricing to achieve desired profitability. Supervise daily department operations including staff training, development, and performance review, utilization of equipment and facilities, safety oversight, project quality, timely delivery, and adherence to policies and procedures. Plan for and participate in business development activities to identify, develop, win, and execute project opportunities and build and maintain client relationships.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:Prepares and executes the department growth strategy and annual business plan.Actively partners with client development staff and leaders from other service lines to grow business with existing clients and develop new clients and business opportunities.Leads talent recruitment and selection efforts to support business needs and strategic growth of the practice. Directs efforts associated with training, mentoring, and development of employees in the department.Directs business development activities, proposal efforts, and project workflows to ensure that adequate fees are available to support resources on the payroll.Routinely tracks key department performance metrics of revenue growth, staff chargeability, project billing and collections, and project profitability.Promotes continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitors quality standards and practices and engages in proactive approaches to risk management and loss prevention. Leads safety efforts for team and ensures team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment. Promotes pre-task planning for all projects.Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline practiced by the Firm, including but not limited to Engineering, Environmental Science, or Geology, and 8 years of practice experience.Previous supervisory or leadership experience.Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.Preferred Certification:Graduate degree preferred.Professional certification or licensure in field of expertise preferred.
