Position Summary


The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive risk management program that strives to go beyond regulatory compliance.  This role will ensure that Plug Power is in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations, including but not limited to occupational safety and health, waste management, environmental regulatory compliance, workers compensation, chemical control, industrial hygiene, fire safety and transportation. The EHS Manager also contribute to efforts that build a strong safety culture and ensure proactive measures to continuously improve Plug Power’s EHS program. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who can work independently and is comfortable multitasking in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This position requires a high level of interaction with all functions throughout the organization, including both verbal and written communication. Occasional travel is required; 10-25%.


Core Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as primary technical resource for employee questions and concerns involving Environmental Health and Safety issues Lead the development, evaluation and upgrading of safety programsDevelop, plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state and national regulations including those governed by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)Maintain EHS documentation including policies, forms, chemical inventory, training records, inspection records and facility Safety Reviews (EHS Webpage and web-based learning management system)Develop and deliver effective Environment Health and Safety training programs for the CompanyLead and participate in the Safety Team meetings, including development, recruitment, and implementation of team meetings and activitiesSupport facility recycling and waste management programIntegrate the material safety data sheet (MSDS) management system with Plug’s database systemPerform safety inspections and surveys; prepare reports of findings and make recommendations on preventative measures where necessaryConduct post-accident investigations, prepare reports identifying possible accident causes and hazards; present recommendations for solutions to these hazards in the futureServe as backup for Facilities Management in routine and emergency response situationsSupport sustainability/corporate social responsibility efforts across the organizationSupport efforts for IATF 16959 certification and customer compliance programsAdvise leadership team on safety compliance concerns and preventative actionsRepresent Plug Power in a professional manner in all interactionsPerform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related field of studyMinimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in EHS compliance within a manufacturing environmentPrior experience as a technical trainer/instructor is highly preferredProfessional EHS certifications including Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or other related safety certifications are strongly preferredAble to interpret regulations and implement requirements in the work environmentKnowledge and broad technical background with federal and state regulations (OSHA, RCRA, DOT, DEC)Ability to analyze information, develop and deliver training programs, adapts policies, create reporting and proven progressive experience to offer recommendations for continuous improvementProven skill set with a variety of computer and software programs including: PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook and others.Capability to present information effectively to diverse audiences and stakeholders while responding to questions from groups of managers, employees and the leadership teamProven leadership, teamwork and flexibility to manage changes in projects and prioritiesAbility to write reports and procedural manualsExceptional public speaking skillsSuperior communication skillsAbility to manage complex projects and multi-task effectivelyExcellent follow-through
