The City of Norfolk's Department of Public Health is seeking to hire an experienced Environmental Health Assistant II to perform several aspects of arboviral surveillance including field work and laboratory work. The Environmental Health Assistant II analyzes data using databases and Geographic Information Systems and determines best course of action for extermination and breeding abatement. Department Starting Hiring Salary $40,688 Essential Functions Essential functions include but are not limited to: + Performs mosquito identification by setting up and collecting mosquito traps, performing an environmental assessment of trap sites, speciating and sorting mosquitoes collected in traps and larval bags by way of chemicals and other laboratory equipment, recording data for analysis, and saving vector species for arboviral testing. + Tests for arboviruses by bleeding sentinel chicken flocks and wild birds using aseptic techniques and medical equipment. + Performs environmental health inspections by surveying, inspecting and investigating for signs of rodent activity or mosquito breeding, advising or referring if on private property, or treating if on city property. + Analyzes data by entering data into database and performing computer analysis, plotting arboviral, rodent, and rodent activity surveillance sites and data on software, and plotting tidal ditch breeding sources on global positioning systems units. + Exterminates pests by formulating and dispensing rodent and mosquito chemicals. + Performs ditch maintenance to reduce the breeding areas of mosquitoes and rodents. Education/Experience Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two year associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. One year in laboratory procedures or a combination of field experience and related coursework. Additional Information & Requirements + Category 8 Pesticide Applicator's License within fourteen months of appointment. + This position requires the ability to work both independently (backyard inspections) and as part of a team (tidal ditching) and the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including mosquito control activities in the summer heat and tidal ditching, which includes navigating marshy terrain wearing hip boots. + Valid Driver's License required. + Consideration for an interview is based solely on the information provided within this application.
