Position Description
The Environmental Services Department is recruiting for the position of Environmental Lab Scientist II. This is the second level of a series of three, responsible for performing lab analyses utilizing appropriate methodologies and procedures, exercising independent judgment, interpreting data, ensuring quality, and demonstrating proficiency across more than one section of the laboratory.

The duties listed below cover a broad range of activities performed by persons in the Environmental Laboratory Scientist II job classification throughout the various City of Tacoma laboratories.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
+ Perform advanced instrumental analysis using Cold-Vapor Mercury Analyzer and Flow Injection Analyzer, Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS), GC/MS/MS, Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectroscopy (LC/MS/MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy (ICP), and/or Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy/Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) following Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other methodologies employing standard to complex analytical techniques and analyses as appropriate.
+ Evaluate data and provide interpretive or narrative reports; organic extractions, extract cleaning procedures, metals digestions, mercury analysis, gravimetric analysis, spectrophotometric analysis, inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
+ Evaluate quality control results, identify deficiencies, and take corrective action. Participate in proficiency studies to demonstrate analytical competency. Perform final QA/QC review of laboratory data.
+ Write and review standard operating procedures. Incorporate certification and other regulatory requirements and amendments in laboratory services.
+ Maintain, troubleshoot and repair complex instruments. Enter laboratory data into a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and/or record information in logbooks per established laboratory procedures.
+ Attend assigned training to keep current on lab techniques and industry best practices.
+ Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Most work is performed indoors in an Environmental Laboratory with moderate chemical exposure risk. Risks include acidic and caustic solutions, neurotoxins, and carcinogenic substances. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required within the work environment. Primary PPE consists of safety glasses or goggles, lab coat, appropriate protective gloves. Due to potential chemical exposure, no bare legs are allowed in the laboratory closed toed shoes are required in the laboratory work areas.
Able to work in a laboratory environment for long periods at a time.
Position may require repetitive handling of samples including pouring, mixing, dilution and/or filtering.
Bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, moderate lifting and bending, standing for extended periods of time, and occasional unassisted lifting of up to 25 lbs. associated with job duties.
Incumbents may be subject to emergency calls during off-duty hours and may be required to work weekends and holidays.

Qualifications
An equivalent* combination of education and experience of an associate degree in chemistry, biology or environmental sciences AND five (5) years of work experience in an environmental laboratory
*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education
Knowledge & Skills
+ Safety precautions followed in chemical and bacteriological laboratories.
+ Organic and inorganic quantitative and qualitative analysis using instrumentation such as ICP, IR, GC, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, LS/MS/MS, flow injection analysis, and automated ion chromatography.
+ Conventional analysis techniques.
+ Operate a personal computer and related software.
+ Perform quantitative and qualitative tests accurately and precisely.
+ Record data accurately.
+ Interpret test results in terms of reasonableness of findings and meeting project objectives and key performance criteria.
+ Communicate clearly orally and in writing.
+ Establish good working relationships with internal and external customers from all backgrounds.
+ Maintain, troubleshoot and make minor repairs on laboratory equipment.
