Statement of Job

Operates, repairs, and maintains the water/wastewater treatment plant’s facilities.  Diagnoses operating problems and performs necessary corrective action during work shift.

 

Major DutiesOperates treatment facilities to control flow and processing of water/wastewater, sludge, and effluent.Monitors gauges, meters and control panels.Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and test results to determine process adjustment requirements.Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control.Starts and stops pump, engines, and generators to control and adjust flow and treatment processes.Maintains shift log and records meter and gauge readings.Takes samples and performs routine laboratory tests and analyses.Performs routine maintenance functions and custodial duties.Makes operating decisions in the absence of supervisory personnel.Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.Safely and efficiently conducts chemical analyses and makes evaluative conclusions.  Performs complex computations and maintains records, prepares reports, understands and carries out oral and written instructions.Interprets laboratory and QA/QC results.  Recognizes problems and develops and implements a plan to identify and correct the cause of the problem.Inputs laboratory data into the computer.Runs tests to determine amounts and degrees of pH, alkalinity, volatile acids, total solids, density, dissolved oxygen, organic material content, coliform bacteria, and residual chlorine, and other complex analyses.Operates a variety of laboratory equipment including pH meters, balances furnaces, autoclaves, titrators, incubators, spectrophotometers, and computers.Assists the environmental technician and environmental equipment utility operator positions in the performance of work.Performs other duties as assigned by supervision.

 

Special Requirements

Experience in operating water/wastewater treatment plants.Knowledge of the principles and practices of water/wastewater treatment plant operations; operating principles of valves, pumps, and motors; principles and methods of bacteriological process and usage; effects and problems of waste in wastewater treatment processes, principles of safe work practices.Requires a valid vehicle operating license.Operator certification at a level required by McCain Foods.Requires ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.Requires appreciable amount of initiative and independence.Requires reasonable care to avoid damage to equipment and tools and to avoid serious injury to self and others.
