Upon hire, this position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and candidate must obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
+ three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
+ any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
+ a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
+ a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Drivers Record Requirements Policy. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the Employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the Employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs Independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: MATHEMATICAL CALCULATIONS; STANDARD SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES. SKILLED IN: OPERATING A VARIETY OF HAND AND POWER TOOLS; OPERATING AND PERFORMING MINOR MAINTENANCE ON SMALL/MEDIUM EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES. ABILITY TO: OPERATE A VARIETY OF HEAVY EQUIPMENT; READ AND UNDERSTAND JOB-RELATED MATERIALS AND FILL OUT REPORTS AND FORMS; MAINTAIN AND REPAIR HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES AND/OR OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES; COMMUNICATE BOTH VERBALLY AND IN WRITING, INCLUDING FOLLOWING ORAL/WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS; DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS; LIFT, CARRY, AND HANDLE UP TO 50 POUNDS; STOOP, CLIMB, SQUAT, PUSH, PULL, CRAWL OR BEND ON A FREQUENT BASIS; WORK OUTDOORS IN VARIOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS ON VARIOUS TERRAINS AND AT VARIOUS HEIGHTS OR IN HIGH VOLUME TRAFFIC; WORK INDEPENDENTLY; STAND FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.
OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary. Possess a valid Class "E" driver’s license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position. While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles. A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
