Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking an Equipment Operator II to join our landscaping crews. This position will work with our Parks and Forestry Operations to maintain 2700 acres of turf and landscape beds on a regular basis.

Departmental Starting Salary Range: $41,231 - $43,292
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Work involves driving and operating trucks, backhoes, and some heavy equipment; transporting other workers, equipment or supplies to and from job sites; operating various equipment to maintain cemetery grounds and landscapes; and performing maintenance and minor repairs of equipment. Checks equipment daily for needed fuel or fluids and inspects for safety prior to use.
+ Operates tractor of 15 to 50 horsepower in the mowing of grass; operates tractor pulling cart to haul dirt; operates dump truck, 3-ton; operates a backhoe; operates air compressor and pneumatic tools; may also use push mower or trimmer.
+ Performs funeral services by digging, packing, turf work, and backfilling graves, hauling excess dirt, erecting tents, removing flowers, and moving and replacing monuments.
+ Removes debris and flowers, trims and plants trees, shrubs, and flowers, edges curbs, applies fertilizer and pesticides, seeds; removes snow, aerates lawns. Provides foundation service by digging holes, mixing and pouring concrete, and moving and installing markers.
+ Must be able to work in all kinds of weather. Must also be flexible if asked to switch from one cemetery to another.
+ Performs other duties as required
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Two years' operating heavy equipment or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.
Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s):
+ Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license.
+ Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License Class B within twelve (12) months of employment.
+ Must be able to obtain a Pesticide Registered Technician Certification within twelve (12) months of employment.
Additional Preferred Experience:
Employees are trained in operation of vehicles and tools in a cemetery environment.
Training limited to familiarization with cemetery operations and record keeping requirements.
Preferred 2 years’ experience in a cemetery environment
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Location: Various Norfolk City Cemeteries. Must be flexible, may need to change from one cemetery to another.
Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. May work some weekends.
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

+ Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
+ Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
