JOB TITLE: Veterinary Technician - ER Technician

A Veterinary Technician for the Emergency Room (ER) at AVSE is responsible for providing quality care to emergency patients and exceptional service to clients in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. This role involves assisting with triage and emergency procedures, providing nursing care, and maintaining accurate patient medical records. The ER Technician must work in accordance with state guidelines, maintaining any required certifications and continuing education credits.

Essential Job Functions:

Provide immediate and ongoing care to emergency patients, ensuring adherence to the medical standards established by the Medical Director. Perform triage, initial patient assessments, and obtain vital signs and patient history. Assist in emergency and critical care procedures, including but not limited to CPR, wound management, and fluid therapy. Administer medications, including controlled substances, and provide necessary documentation, logging, and security. Monitor patients for changes in condition and respond accordingly, communicating effectively with veterinarians and other team members. Demonstrate proficiency in placing intravenous catheters, drawing blood, administering drugs, and using emergency equipment and supplies. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the ER area, including disinfection and sterilization of equipment and patient housing. Uphold safety protocols to ensure a secure, healthy, and humane environment for both staff and patients, in compliance with applicable regulations. Accurately document patient records, treatments, and observations in a timely manner, ensuring all communications are recorded in the electronic medical record system. Collaborate effectively with other team members to provide cohesive and efficient patient care.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 2 years of experience in a veterinary emergency or critical care setting. Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. Comfortable working with or around sick animals, hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors. Strong multitasking and time management skills; ability to remain calm and efficient in a fast-paced environment. Must be flexible with scheduling, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team. Must maintain a valid credential as a veterinary technician in the state of employment and meet any other state requirements.
