3. JOB PURPOSE

 

The ESG Manager will be responsible for implementing the country’s ESG/ Sustainability strategy in line with the Engie Group Policy, Purpose and wider objectives, with a principle focus on the environmental, climate and circular economy aspects of the strategy. The ESG Manager will work with teams across the project lifecycle of the company’s renewables and flexible generation projects to ensure that ESG risks, impacts and opportunities are adequately addressed and taken into account in decision-making.

The specific remit of the ESG team is to de-risk projects from an ESG perspective, enable compliance, maximum positive impact, and to bring value to the projects and company through best practice ESG performance.

 

 

4. Key Accountabilities

Key Activities

ESG Policy, Systems, Reporting and Communication

Works with the Head of ESG to ensure that the Company’s ESG policies, strategies and ESMS are properly implemented, including meeting company goals in relation to ESG, sustainability and impact Ensures that company and project ESG risks are proactively identified and managed through consistent and continuous data collation, monitoring and review, thereby working to protect Engie  from material environmental and social risks Works with various business functions to co-ordinate ESG input and ensure ESG matters are integrated into project acquisition, due diligence, budgeting and bidding Works with the EHS, Social and ED functions to ensure that these aspects are fully integrated for effective ESG management and implementation of ESMS at project company level Assists project companies in coordinating and ensuring consistency in ESG reporting and governance processes including Social and Ethics Committee meetings, monthly progress reports, lender reports and ongoing monitoring of related actions

Business Development

Assist and guide the project development team in ESG matters and screening projects for E&S risks and impacts and assisting in the design of mitigation strategies Undertake and/or support environmental and social due diligences, as required. Support lender ESG processes and due diligence processes where required Support to the business development team in consultant and ESG advisor oversight

Construction and Operation

Assist the project company teams in developing the ESMS and overseeing contractor ESMS implementation Work with contractors to ensure that Engie ESG and lender standards are met and monitored on a continuous basis. Support the project construction and operations teams to ensure all assets are managed in a way that ensures compliance with all regulatory, company, lender, Engie Global and best practice requirements Ensure that mitigations and management plans meet required regulatory and international standards, and that environmental and social requirements are incorporated into the project company management systems. Where applicable, leads the design, development and implementation of biodiversity offset/ conservation projects, including stakeholder relationship management ESG reporting for lenders, ensuring specific points of interest and reporting compliance are met.

ESG Data Collection and Reporting

Support to business functions in ESG data collection, collation and analysis to meet various reporting requirements and ensure continuous improvement

 

5. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

 

Qualification and Experience

Minimum a Bachelor’s degree but ideally an advanced Degree in Environmental Science/ Energy / Environmental Engineering/ Development Studies. At least 10 years of work experience in a similar/ related field (energy; ESG; Sustainability; extractives), preferably in project development, development finance, E&S consulting, banking/ infrastructure investment in South Africa and/or other parts of Southern Africa. At least 2 years of these should be in a management level position. A focus and experience in the environmental discipline is preferrable, including environmental monitoring and assessment. Exposure to the renewable energy or mining sector preferrable. Experience in conducting environmental and social due diligence assessments, especially in relation to international standards is desired. Management and co-ordination skills and experience. Driver’s license.

Technical  Knowledge

Strong environmental knowledge/ experience in application coupled with insight and experience in broader ESG, particularly across the project lifecycle (development, construction, operation, decommissioning). Experience in application of IFC Performance Standards to projects. Business Perspective in integration of ESG into an organization. Information Management skills, data collation and analysis across a broad range of ESG topics. Understanding of Legislation, Policies, Procedures and Standards. Project Management Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) Comfortable with engaging

 

Language:

English Excellent English communication skills (Verbal and written)

Location / travel

Based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
