We are seeking a research lead to join our newly created Natural Capital Research Institute, within ISS ESG research. The Institute’s objective is to develop and execute a comprehensive and cohesive strategy for natural capital research and to produce cutting-edge, decision useful insights, data, and tools to help our institutional investor clients manage nature related risks and capitalize on opportunities. This effort will encompass thought-leadership, front-office client engagements, strategic collaborations, and methodological innovations across ISS STOXX products and solutions. The work of the Institute is divided across three pillars: Biodiversity, Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) and Freshwater and Oceans. We are looking for a research lead for the FLAG or Freshwater and Oceans pillars.

As a member of the Natural Capital Research Institute, you will play a crucial role in expanding our understanding of how nature affects portfolio companies across their value chain, and how nature-related considerations can enhance the investment decision-making processes. 

Key Responsibilities

Research and analysis:

Co-develop the research agenda for the Natural Capital Research Institute, focusing on risks, impacts, interdependencies, and opportunities for the investment community.

Track and monitor different nature-related frameworks, standards, guidelines, industry initiatives and emerging data and solutions from our competitors and other key stakeholders.

Develop thought leadership and insights pieces leveraging ISS ESG data and analytics. This will include extensive primary and secondary research.

Contribute to methodological developments related to natural capital, across industries and asset classes.

Stakeholder engagement:

Participate in client meetings and conferences as a subject matter expert.

Support relationship building with clients and prospects, academic institutions, experts, and industry leaders to help elevate our brand and inform insights, case studies, and new perspectives on the subject matter.

Internal collaboration and coordination:

Support the Nature Modeling Data and Products teams in integrating natural capital across the different product and solution offerings.

Collaborate with senior leadership to develop strategic projects and identify new opportunity areas.

Contribute to an engaging, positive, and collaborative working environment.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree or PHD on relevant field such as environmental science or sustainability with a focus on nature, regenerative agriculture, sustainable forestry, freshwater and/or oceans

Knowledge of financial markets, investment management and/or sustainable finance is preferable.

Excellent English language skills, both written and oral.

Strong research and analytical skills, both quantitative and qualitative.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with customer-first attitude.

Willingness to work with a highly collaborative, flexible, and innovative team across different locations.

Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, to prioritize tasks, and to meet deadlines.

Have a can-do attitude and a self-driven work ethic.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office package (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).

Ideally, 2-4 years of experience

Base salary: The New York City expected base pay range is $80,000-100,000 per year. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and level of education.
