The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience is housed within the Biological Sciences Division (BSD). The BSD is the largest academic unit within the University and comprises faculty from 10 basic science departments, 13 clinical departments, and several Centers and Institutes. The approximately 1,300 faculty and 3,000 staff members working in the BSD collaborate across the organization to achieve our Mission, Vision, and Values (MVV):

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago has a long and highly respected history of clinical, teaching, and scientific excellence. Many of its former graduates are current and former Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry and leading researchers in addictions, impulse disorders, genetics of serious mental illness, and child development. Current faculty includes leading experts in diverse areas spanning clinical subspecialties and basic neuroscience.

Research conducted in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience is broad and multidisciplinary, spanning molecular, biological, imaging, and genetic approaches in animal models to human laboratory studies and patient-based clinical investigations in psychiatric disorders. The collective mission is to identify underlying mechanisms and risk factors and develop efficacious treatments for a number of psychiatric and health conditions, including anxiety and depression, autism spectrum disorders, bipolar illness and schizophrenia, dementia, obesity, eating disorders, substance use, and impulse control disorders. Examining developmental and cultural factors that impact mental health and treatment response are also strengths of the department, as is the use of cutting-edge technologies, including neuroimaging and functional genomics.


Job Summary
 

The Executive Administrator (EA) oversees the department's administrative oversight, including faculty and clinical associates. The EA serves as the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience's chief operating and fiscal officer and is accountable for an all-funds budget of $11M. The EA will plan, coordinate, and direct the Department's broad and complex financial and management functions supporting clinical care, research, and medical education. The EA serves as a member of the Executive Committee led by the Vice Chairs/Directors and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience consists of highly competitive residency and fellowship programs, annually training 25 residents and 10 fellows.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Department Chair, the Executive Administrator (EA) develops short- and long-term business plans for the Department. With a plan to expand into multiple suburban locations, the EA works to plan and execute this plan along with health system administration.S/he works with the Chair, Section Chiefs, and their respective Section Administrators to conduct ongoing assessments of, and respond to, growth opportunities and unmet needs within the Department.Works in partnership with the Leadership Team to develop strategies for identifying and securing donor support, fostering relationships that align with the department's mission and long-term objectives.Provides programmatic leadership and input for all strategic plan implementation processes.Works with the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) and University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) leadership to implement new and expanded existing service lines, strategic alliances, and new clinical sites. Oversees space assignments and prioritize capital requests, including equipment and space renovations.Provides effective and inspiring leadership by actively participating in all programs and services, developing a broad and deep knowledge of all programs.Identifies opportunities to leverage cross-program strengths to take advantage of new opportunities and/or to address organizational challenges.Fosters a safe and ethical environment, creating accountability to high organizational standards.Engages team development through coaching, goal setting, hiring, mentorship, talent management, best practices, and accountability.Provides leadership to managers within a department to support teaching, medical research and clinical care. Facilitates research initiatives of the faculty and staff.Directs department priorities, allocates resources, and executes strategic plans.Oversees non-medical activities of the department(s). Manages policy development and implementation in various departmental areas.Performs other related work as needed.

Experience:

Progressively responsible administrative/supervisory experience.Healthcare and/or academic medical experience.Experience with revenue cycle for hospital and professional fee billing.Directly related financial and budget development experience in a complex environment.Background working in a fiscally responsible, highly regulated business setting that regularly employs bench marking.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing programs.Knowledge of oracle enterprise systems.Proficient mathematical and analytical skills, including data sets and data aggregation.Knowledge of research funding and appreciation for working in a research-intensive academic culture.
