Job Description

Executive Director, Compliance & Ethics Investigations

This executive director plays a pivotal role in influencing Gilead’s ethical standards and ensuring compliance with regulations, while also influencing stakeholders to embrace ethical practices, regulatory adherence, and the commitment to doing the right thing. 

This role will be based in Foster City, CA.

Responsibilities: 

Provide strategic vision and leadership for the Ethics and Compliance investigations function, ensuring alignment with the organization's ethics and compliance program. Lead the management of misconduct concerns raised including from the Ethics Hotline, ensuring that it operates as a central and effective channel for reporting and misconduct and addressing ethical concerns throughout the organization. Lead the team responsible for operating the Ethics Hotline and conducting investigations, as well as partner with other areas responsible for protecting the company’s ethical and compliance reputation, such as HR and Litigation and Investigation.  Ensure reports are triaged appropriately to reach the right team. Assess and manage compliance concerns reported from various sources, emphasizing our commitment to ethical conduct. Collaborate with key stakeholders to recommend, determine, and influence appropriate courses of action including trend identification and remediation. Triage, create and execute compliance investigation plans and oversee the work of internal and external resources involved in the investigation.  Oversee internal and external resources involved in investigations. Ensure investigations are efficient, effective, and thorough. Provide guidance and advice to employees, leaders, and executives on ethical dilemmas, conflicts of interest, and compliance issues. Ensure the Ethics Hotline and other relevant sources of raising concerns operate as an effective channel for reporting ethical concerns. Develop and implement protocols for receiving, documenting, and responding to reports made through various sources including the Ethics Hotline, ensuring a commitment to transparency, confidentiality, and accountability. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align ethics and compliance efforts with organizational objectives. Represent the organization in dealings with regulatory agencies and industry groups on ethics and compliance matters. Maintain accurate records of ethics and compliance activities and reports of misconduct.  Prepare regular reports for senior management and regulatory bodies. Present investigation findings, insights, and recommendations to executive leadership and the Board of Directors, highlighting trends, potential areas of risk and proposing remediation strategies to protect our reputation and integrity. Partner closely with the Employee Relations & Litigation & Investigation team and other relevant functions to conduct both privileged and non-privileged compliance investigations, creating a seamless partnership and alignment of core strategies. Conduct regular assessments on trends, potential root causes of issues. Develop insights and recommendations for raising the bar in Gilead’s ethics and compliance program. Maintain strict confidentiality throughout the investigation process. Lead, inspire, and develop the team, fostering a high-performance culture. 

Minimum Education & Experience:  

A Juris Doctorate is preferred with 14+ years or 16+ years of experience, with a BA/BS degree or 14+ years of experience, with an MS/MA or MBA Demonstrated experience in providing strategic vision and leadership for ethics and compliance investigations, preferably within a pharma, large organization, or global company.  Proven ability to assess and manage compliance concerns reported from various sources, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to ethical conduct. Experience in collaborating with key stakeholders to determine appropriate courses of action and aligning ethics and compliance efforts with organizational objectives. Experience in preparing and presenting reports to senior management, regulatory bodies, and the Board of Directors. Exceptional leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve organizational goals. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization. Ability to influence programs, initiatives, process, and policy across the organization to ensure the company operates with the highest ethical and compliance standards. Proven ability to foster a high-performance culture and develop the capabilities of team members. Demonstrated ability to analyze complex issues, develop effective strategies, and make sound decisions in high-pressure situations. Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure investigations are conducted efficiently, effectively, and thoroughly. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism. 

Knowledge & Other Requirements 

High level of ethical standards and integrity, with a commitment to upholding the highest levels of ethical conduct within the organization. Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to ethics, compliance, and corporate governance. Ability to drive continuous improvement.  Demonstrated approach to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and adaptability, particularly within changing regulatory environments. 


 

The salary range for this position is: $255,425.00 - $330,550.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
