Exercise Physiologist

Summary:

Under general supervision of the Nurse Manager and in accordance with established policies and procedures evaluates provides physical assessment and directs patient care. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patients.

 

Responsibilities:

Performs comprehensive evaluation and physical assessment of new patients obtains patient history pertinent diagnostic data and risk factor information from the medical record.

Performs clinical activities such as making patient assessments taking vital signs administering EKGs initiating and terminating IV�s evaluating lab values administrating vaccines and providing patient education. Communicates assessments and findings to attending physicians as indicated. Participates in the development and evaluation of the patient care plan.

Evaluates hemodynamic electrocardiographic and symptomatic response to exercise and assess appropriateness of responses to the prescribed exercise intensity.

Follows the routine standing orders for administration of cardiac stress testing which include participation in Advanced Cardiac Life Support procedures. May receive and transcribe physician�s orders. Maintains correspondence with referring physicians. Notifies referring physicians of any untoward events.


Educates patients about health conditions and treatment plans including medications diagnostic tests and interventions.


Documents in the medical record. Ensures patient's file is complete following an office visit or diagnostic test. Updates patient care plan and problem list as appropriate.


Takes and records base line and exercise vital signs. Assists patients with telemetry hook-ups. Performs 12-lead EKGs. Recognizes absolute and relative contraindications for stress testing as outlined in ACSM and AACVPR guidelines.


May be responsible for coordinating equipment maintenance through bio-medical engineering keeping inventory on equipment parts and weekly cleaning of exercise equipment.


May assist with coordinating daily operations of as well as planning for long-term growth and expansion. Participates in projects which promote the growth and development of the Cardiovascular Institute.


Assists with maintenance of emergency supplies and crash cart. Assists manager with the maintenance of equipment and supply inventory.


May assist quality assurance safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established hospital department policies procedures and objectives. Performs other related duties as required.


Performs all essential functions with consideration of the age-specific needs of the geriatric adult and adolescent patient. Fosters patient and family centered care and support services in accordance with the Lifespan and The Miriam Hospital�s mission vision values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.


As necessary performs functions of subordinate clinical staff due to workload or staff shortages or to demonstrate proper work procedures.

 

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:


Equivalent to a Bachelor�s Degree in Exercise Physiology or health-related field. Current CPR certification required.


Knowledge of exercise physiology and exercise prescription. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required; may obtain within six months of appointment.


Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.


EXPERIENCE:

Between two to three years� progressively more responsible related experience as an Exercise Physiologist within a patient care environment.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals physicians� offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized or nullified by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.


Prolonged sitting standing and walking. May be required to lift/turn patients and equipment. Repeated bending squatting stooping.
