The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities. The Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) is seeking to hire up to three (3) student worker / law externs for a 90-day part-time externship of up to 20 hours per week. OAH is the largest of three Executive Branch Courts with over 75 full-time equivalents located in St. Paul and Duluth. OAH, with 30 judges, is comparable in size to the Ramsey County District Court with 32 judges. OAH has exclusive, trial-level jurisdiction over 200 unique areas of administrative law and workers’ compensation. This means the decisions of OAH are appealable to higher-level appellate courts (Minnesota Court of Appeals, Minnesota Supreme Court, and Minnesota Workers’ Compensation Court of Appeals) and not at trial-level district courts. This position exists to assist OAH with routine legal and clerical support work while providing the student with a meaningful and educational employment experience. Students will have the opportunity to observe hearings held before OAH judges and learn how contested claims in administrative and workers' compensation matters are initiated, litigated, and ultimately resolved. Incumbents must be enrolled in an ABA accredited law school and have completed at least one year of their law school program. **Minimum Qualifications** Genuine interest in administrative law, workers' compensation, or state government regulatory law and operations. Completion of at least one year (or the equivalent for part-time students) of law school. **Physical Requirements** This is a sedentary position. It requires occasionally moving and transporting such articles as file folders and laptops or accounting boxes. May need to maintain a stationary position for long periods of time while carrying out job duties. **Additional Requirements** It is the policy of the Office of Administrative Hearings that all employees submit to a background investigation prior to employment. The background check may consist of the following components: + SEMA4 Records Check (applies to current and past state employees only) + Criminal History Check + Employment Reference Check + Court Records Check AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER Minnesota State Colleges and Universities is an Equal Opportunity employer/educator committed to the principles of diversity.
