External Organizing Coordinator

SEIU Local 521 was founded in 2007 when 5 local unions came together in the Bay Area, Central Coast
and Central Valley to form one larger, more powerful union. Together our members are building a true
21st century union fighting to empower and improve the lives of our members. We represent over 50,000
public service workers in cities, counties, courts, schools, private non-profits, special districts, and public
health care.

AT SEIU LOCAL 521: Our mission is to provide our members with a voice in the workplace, in their
union and in the larger community. Through our actions, we intend to create a more just and humane
society. We are committed to protecting and improving the lives of workers and their families. We will
work to improve and protect the services we provide to our communities. We believe that by working
together as a united front, we can win better contracts and build industry power in our region.

The Organizing Coordinator is energetic, passionate, and hardworking; excited to be a part of a
movement for real social change, who believes in the value of work and public service, and who wants to
be part of a team that fights and wins for workers, their families, and their communities. The role is
accountable for organizing new bargaining units into SEIU Local 521. Our organizing plan is focused on
the public sector, privatized public services, and public healthcare.

Ideal candidates for this role understand industry analysis, have experience managing large teams over
large jurisdictions, and experience applying strategic leverage, research, policy, and ground level
organizing to create the necessary conditions for victory.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):
 Create and manage campaigns that follow the overall vision and priorities of Local 521.
 Lead and provide support to teams of staff and members in the execution of overall campaign
plan as well as individual work plans.
 Assist in the training and development of staff and member organizers.
 Lead staff by example, setting high standards in work ethic and professional approach to the
work.
 Make short and long term campaign plans, and carrying out multi-component plans.
 Create and articulating a positive vision for campaigns and of the union as a whole.
 Build one-one-one relationships with workers, educating them about the union.
 Conduct individual and group meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns.
 Work with staff to identify, recruit, and develop leaders to guide and lead their campaign.
 Motivate individual workers and groups of workers to take action.
 Work to create real and positive ways to involve community allies in current organizing
campaigns.
 Engage workers in broader union efforts to change industry standards as a whole.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 Prior management of union staff experience
 Commitment to social justice and the mission of SEIU 521
 Strong written and verbal communication skills
 Ability to effectively plan and implement work and manage time, as part of a team and
individually.
 Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
 Willingness to travel frequently and/or for extended period of time within the local’s jurisdiction,
based on work assignments
 Motivated self- starter who is also a solid team player
 Strong personal planning and time management skills
 The ability to work with people from other cultures and backgrounds
 Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid California driver’s license; must pass a DMV
check and have a good driving record; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum
of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$100,000 property coverage); and
must possess an automobile for business use

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS: ($104,220.54-115,191.66)
 Employer-paid defined benefit pension plan & 401K.

 Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience
