Job Description

NREL is looking for a early-career electrical engineer. This position will support the NREL campus facilities electrical engineering team and work on multiple projects concurrently at NREL’s two main research campuses, South Table Mountain (main campus) and the Flatirons Campus. This engineer will work under supervision to provide facilities electrical engineering services including power distribution designs and use associated electrical modeling software.  The engineer will also assist other engineers, project managers, and the facilities CAD team to ensure that the project electrical design and associated construction documentation conform to NREL‘s requirements and applicable building codes. Field work is an essential part of the engineer’s role.

Responsibilities:

Assist with the maintenance and updating the campus electrical model.

Assist in maintaining NREL’s electrical studies using the existing database.

Perform minor system updates to short circuit, arc flash, coordination studies using SKM, and may include field surveys.

Provide CAD assistance including record keeping and organization of electrical drawings and as-built drawings using AutoCAD.

Assist senior electrical engineers in project technical reviews and updates.

Assist senior electrical engineers in construction field surveys of electrical conditions and document using AutoCAD.

Assist the facilities electrical engineer in selecting and specifying electrical equipment systems.

Assist in updating design standards related to facilities electrical systems.

Under the supervision of senior electrical engineers, interpret and apply codes, job procedures, standards, and specifications.

Interface with other engineering design disciplines.

Provide field assistance as required.

Monitor and review on-site installation, start-up, and operation of electrical projects.

Develop simple control panel designs.

As applicable, select and specify instruments racks and designs in support of research projects.

Assist in preparing project electrical specifications and summaries for front end design packages.

Work with the facilities electrical engineer to develop project drawings for electrical layouts, schematics, and installation details.

Review vendor drawings and support construction, project checkout, and startup.

Follow all ESH&Q policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment.

Basic QualificationsRelevant Bachelor's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. Limited use and/or application of technical principles, theories and concepts. Limited knowledge of industry practices and standards. Basic knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Good analytical and problem solving skills. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Experience with designing or assisting in the design of laboratory spaces.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a national laboratory setting

Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam desired in the State of Colorado, or ability to complete within 12 months.

General knowledge of National Electric Code.

Familiarity with electrical modeling tools, preferably SKM, and electrical estimating tools such as Cost Works.

Familiarity with meters and energy management tools.

Basic knowledge of building IT infrastructure and integration of technologies including SCADA, security systems, lighting control systems, and fire alarm systems.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Professional I / Annual Salary Range: $65,100 - $107,400
