The Public Health Aerobiology Laboratory PHAB Lab in the Department of Global Environmental and Occupational Health within the University of Maryland College Park School of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual for the grants and contracts funded post of Faculty Research Assistant Airborne Infection Bioaerosol Research Technician to work on studies of airborne transmission of influenza and other respiratory viruses under Principal Investigators Donald K Milton MD DrPH and Kristen K Coleman PhD The PHAB Labs work is internationally recognized for providing critical scientific evidence for the airborne transmission of respiratory viruses and the protective effects of masks as source control to prevent spread of infectious aerosols The successful candidate will work as a bioaerosol research technician for the NIH funded project Evaluating Modes of Influenza Transmission 2 EMIT 2 using Innovative Technologies and Designs in Controlled Environments and other related projects involving severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 SARS CoV 2 and potentially Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza HPAI viruses to further our understanding of respiratory virus transmission and prevention The successful candidate will be responsible for Operating and maintaining aerosol samplers to collect breath samples from study participants Collecting ambient aerosol samples in various field settings Participating in laboratory studies and protocol development Testing innovative new devices for characterizing infectious viral aerosols Assisting with germicidal ultraviolet light air disinfection Maintaining laboratory equipment and equipment maintenance logs Maintaining good laboratory practices and sterile technique for sample handling Contribute to laboratory management tasks equipment calibration organization of supplies inventory etc Work in the PHAB lab will require laboratory biosafety and human subjects research training respiratory training qualifying for and wearing a fit tested respirator and evening and weekend shifts during the influenza season This is a grants and contracts funded position with guaranteed funding available for 2 years with a salary commensurate with education and experience including full benefits
