Qualifications

The Mayo Clinic Department of Neuroscience is recruiting an outstanding investigator (MD or MD/PhD or equivalent) with neuropathology training and expertise in aging and neurodegenerative disorders. The individual should be board certified or eligible in Anatomic Pathology or Neuropathology. This individual is expected to establish a robust research program utilizing neuropathological tools to address complex neurological disease processes and aging and to become an integral member of the Mayo Clinic Brain Bank team.

Candidates are expected to provide neuropathological diagnoses, with a focus on autopsy pathology, rather than neurosurgical pathology. They would provide assessments on brains submitted to the Mayo Clinic Brain Bank for diagnostic evaluation and research, including establishment and use of latest approaches in biospecimen banking and neuropathologic characterizations. These approaches may include, but are not limited to quantitative neuropathology, spatial multi-omics, AI-assisted phenotyping. In addition to supporting the Mayo Clinic Brain Bank activities and investigators who utilize samples and data from the Brain Bank, the candidate is expected to establish an independent, extramurally funded research program. The candidate is also expected to participate in education and institutional administrative activities.

THE DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSCIENCE is internationally recognized for academic excellence with a specific focus on understanding the etiology and developing diagnostic and treatment methods for complex neurologic diseases, including neurodegenerative dementias, movement, neurovascular, neuroimmune disorders and aging. The Department spans all Mayo Clinic sites and includes 28 primary faculty members, 62 allied health staff, 126  postdoctoral associates, and 36 doctoral students. Scientists within the neuroscience department have strong expertise in  neurogenomics, neuropathology, disease modeling, molecular and cell biology, immunity, and experimental therapeutics. The Department faculty play key roles in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and other large-scale NIH-funded consortia. The Mayo Clinic Brain Bank housed within the department is directed by Dr. Dennis Dickson and has banked postmortem brains from approximately 11,000 individuals with neruodegenerative dementias, movement disorders, neurovascular, neuroimmune and motor neuron diseases, as well as unaffected controls. The brain bank serves various projects and programs within the institution, as well as supporting the broader research community including serving as the brain bank for the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) and CurePSP. In 2022, the Department of Neuroscience received over $35M in funding the majority of which was from federal grants. Our faculty holds leadership roles on major NIH and foundation programs including but not limited to AMP-AD, CLEAR-AD, Dementia with Lewy Bodies Consortium, Tau Center without walls.
