POSITION:
The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) is seeking a highly qualified Clinician-Scientist-Leader to join our exceptional team in the role of Vice President of Critical Care Medicine (VP CCM). The VP CCM serves as a member of the medical executive team and manages and provides vision and direction to the Critical Care Medicine service line. The VP CCM chairs and serves on various committees, workgroups, and task forces at the facility and/or VISN (VA regional) level. The VP CCM will have research and academic opportunities through the VA as well as the Schools of the Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.

DUTIES:
This position is responsible for leadership and management of the Critical Care Medicine Service Line, including oversight of budget and fiscal management, personnel management, recruitment and retention, strategic planning, program development, mentorship and education of trainees, quality management, and assuring that the resource core and administrative functions are integrated to provide healthcare excellence and healthcare excellence and value. The incumbent is expected to provide leadership to enhance ongoing programs and develop new programs to advance Veterans’ health through excellence in critical care medicine, training in critical care medicine, and research.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• MD or DO in Critical Care Medicine.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Board certified in a specialty is preferred.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
• Demonstrated experience in a leadership role in an academic institution.
• Eligible for associate professor or full professor level academic appointment at university affiliate.
• Record of distinguished accomplishments and proficiency in research and administration to include research publications and funding, mentoring experience, and promoting a progressive and dynamic work environment in a complex academic environment.
• Experience in working in complex health care systems including solid organ transplant patients and VA systems with a strong academic affiliation.
• Ability to support growth in all scholarly realms (education, research, clinical care), on an individual level as a team builder, with personal excellence in leadership/administration and clinical care, research, and/or educational leadership.

ABOUT THE VA PITTSBURGH HEALTHCARE SYSTEM:
VAPHS is an integrated healthcare system that proudly serves the Veteran population throughout the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The facility has 146 acute care beds, 78 inpatient behavioral health beds, and 188 long-term care beds. VAPHS consists of two clinical care facilities in Pittsburgh as well as five community-based outpatient clinics. VAPHS also serves as a tertiary referral center for the western half of VA Healthcare–VISN 4, treating Veterans from Altoona, Butler, and Erie in Pennsylvania and Clarksburg, West Virginia. The healthcare system maintains academic affiliations with over 200 associated health educational programs, including the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine.

The VAPHS Critical Care Medicine Service Line encompasses over 225 FTE, including Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, and Medical teams. The department includes funded researchers pursuing both theoretical and practical improvements to the science of Critical Care Medicine. The Veterans Affairs medical system is a national integrated healthcare system and VA Pittsburgh has a history of participation in national research projects examining an enormous and real-world data repository to answer important, timely, and practical questions facing Intensivists. The incumbent may have the opportunity to be a Vice Chair in the University of Pittsburgh Critical Care Medicine Department.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH:
The Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh is one of the only stand-alone academic departments focusing on critical care medicine in the United States. Along with its clinical partner UPMC, department faculty provide clinical services to critically ill adult and pediatric patients at both the VA and UPMC. The Department’s research activities span bench-to-bedside-to-population health, supported by over $20 million in NIH funding and two T32 training grants.
