Essential functions (job duties):
All faculty members in the WSU School of Medicine make general contributions to their Department as well as contributions specific to their individual talents and interests. Within the Karmanos Cancer Institute, faculty members are expected to contribute to our clinical, research and teaching missions within one of our four Programs: Molecular Therapeutics, Molecular Imaging, Tumor Biology and Microenvironment, and Population Studies and Disparities Research. It is expected that the successful candidate will conduct independent research including maintaining a strong record of accomplishments and the ability to secure external cancer-focused funding, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and participate in service assignments of importance to the Karmanos Cancer Institute, Department of Oncology and the University. It is an expectation for all faculty members that they participate in teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees, attend faculty meetings, serve on standing and ad hoc committees, attend Department social events supportive of trainees and students when possible, and serve as a consistent positive force in their Department .

Qualifications:
Doctoral Degree required MD, Ph.D. or MD/PhD degree. If MD degree, valid Michigan Medical License required . Rank commensurate with credentials. Post-graduate training. Outstanding publication record in top-tier publications. Evidence of scholarly productivity (i.e., external grant support and scholarly publications) reflected in peer-reviewed grant and contract funding. Demonstrated track record of proven leadership in relation to program development. Experience in faculty mentorship. Academic accomplishments commensurate with appointment to Assistant, Associate or Full Professor.
Ability to provide quality instruction to a variety of students. Strong evidence of research productivity relevant to the major themes of the Cancer Institute’s Programs, specifically;
Tumor Biology and Microenvironment Program (TBM)
The TBM Program aims to discover the cellular and molecular determinants that drive the initiation and progression of cancers through interactions with their microenvironments. The themes are 1) to explore biological processes that mediate the phenotypical plasticity, proliferation, and survival of tumor cells, 2) to investigate mechanisms that enable tumor cells to overcome external barriers during invasion and metastasis, and 3) to develop new strategies to engage the immune system as powerful defenses against cancer.
Molecular Imaging Program (MI)
The three key scientific themes of the MI Program are: i ) To synthesize compounds and develop new methods to image tumor metabolism and drug pharmacodynamics; ii) To implement and test new imaging methods for risk assessment, detection, guidance and monitoring for response to therapy; iii) To develop and test novel instrumentation for molecular imaging .
Molecular Therapeutics Program (MT)
Research in the MT Program is guided by the scientific themes of the Program which are to: 1) identify and validate novel therapeutics, targets and pathways for selective tumor targeting; 2) identify cellular/molecular determinants and biomarkers of tumor response; and 3) validate clinical effectiveness of new agents in interventional treatment trials.
Population Studies and Disparities Research Program (PSDR)
The PSDR Program is guided by the scientific themes of the Program, which are to: 1) investigate the distribution and determinants of cancer risk and cancer outcomes with attention to racial and ethnic disparities; and 2) develop and test interventions focused on patient, family member, and physician behaviors to reduce health disparities in cancer prevention, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life outcomes.
