The Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania (HCWP) is a state and federally-funded 501(c)3 charitable organization that provides comprehensive medical care to the residents of Western Pennsylvania with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding and clotting disorders. The Center was among the first to be included in the federally funded national network of Hemophilia Treatment Centers established in 1975. As a federally funded comprehensive hemophilia treatment center, HCWP qualifies and participates in the federal 340B Drug Pricing Program by maintaining a clotting factor program. HCWP’s factor program was established in 2001 and has allowed the Center to improve its patient services and programs through its 340B resources. The HCWP has also been extremely active in clinical research and has led or participated in dozens of single-center and multicenter clinical trials in the US and worldwide.
The HCWP Scientific Director will serve as a member of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. We are seeking candidates who will be hired as professors, with a primary appointment in the Department of Medicine, Division of Classical Hematology. The HCWP Scientific Director will also join the University of Pittsburgh's Vascular Medicine Institute (VMI), a leading multi-disciplinary research institute focused on disorders of blood and blood flow. As a faculty member, the HCWP Director will benefit from the vast clinical and research resources of this outstanding biomedical system, including the medical school, which currently ranks #14 in the Nation. The ideal candidate should demonstrate excellence in clinical and/or basic and translational research, have a track record of mentorship, and have a strong interest in working in an academic environment with exceptional opportunities for teaching and research. Opportunities for interdisciplinary and translational research collaboration and teaching at all levels of medical education are available. Applicants who have been successful in obtaining NIH R01-level peer-reviewed funding are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, or PhD, and if physicians are ABP or ABIM eligible or board certified in hematology (internal medicine), The faculty member will be expected to participate in the teaching and training of Hematology and Oncology fellows, residents, and medical students, as well as contribute to the Division's annual Scientific Conferences. For candidates with an MD, it is desirable that they participate in the HCWP clinic under the direction of the Clinical Directors. The Scientific Director will report to the Chief of the Division of Classical Hematology within the Department of Medicine and the Director of the Vascular Medicine Institute.
The HCWP Scientific Director/Principal Investigator is responsible for working with HCWP Clinical Directors to facilitate and ensure that federal 340B priorities are furthered and scientific priorities and initiatives established at the center level. The primary purposes of the federal 340B program are 1) to promote comprehensive hemophilia care, 2) to prevent hemophilia complications through an accessible multi-state network of centers of excellence, and 3) to participate in surveillance projects and data collection as required by the federal grants.
The HCWP Scientific Director will also be responsible for developing a research vision and strategic plan that will 1) advance the care of patients at the center and 2) advance research in the field of bleeding disorders.The HCWP Scientific Director will be expected to serve as a research mentor for the current faculty members employed by the HCWP and develop the careers of future leaders in the field of coagulation disorders.
The HCWP Scientific Director will serve as an expert leader, encouraging and growing a culture of academic teamwork and working with the HCWP Clinical Directors to set overarching priorities for the HCWP.
Applicants for Professor (tenure stream/tenured), will have served five to seven years as Associate Professor. The rank of professor recognizes the attainment of authoritative knowledge and reputation in a recognized field of learning and the achievement of effective teaching skills. The professor should have attained superior stature in their field through scholarship, professional practice, and leadership in professional and learned organizations.
