Position: Farm Assistant

Location: Smart Farm @ Good Shepherd hospital; Barrington, IL.

Full Time; 1st Shift

Major Responsibilities:

Assists with daily field operations and greenhouse work including but not limited to seedling production, bed preparation, transplanting crops, weeding, thinning, cultivating, and harvesting.Follows existing crop plans, crop rotation, succession and companion planting based on farm plans.Supports farmer in preparations for winter season.Contributes to accurate and timely harvest records and record-keeping.Harvest, washes, packs and delivers produce to farmer’s markets and wholesale accounts.Serves as resource to and leads volunteer groups.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

Valid Driver's License 

Education Required:

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience Required:

1 year of farming or relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

Familiarity with organic farming.Knowledge of fruit and vegetable production.Willingness to learn, receive feedback about, and integrate efficiencies related to the task at hand.Demonstrated flexibility to work with shifting timelines and schedulesAbility to work under pressure in a fast-paced environmentAbility to maintain a positive attitude in harsh weather conditionsMotivated, organized, proactive, collaborative and community minded.Good communication skills.

Physical Requirements

Able to lift 50+lbsAbility to work and stand for extended periods of time.Ability to safely operate tractors and other farm equipment preferred, but not requiredWill be exposed to outside in extreme weather conditionsMust be able to work 2 Saturdays a month May-September
