Position Availability: Position start date: September 15, 2024 Position Title: Fashion Studies Research Assistant Requisition Number: 0406073479 Location New York City Position Type: Student Department: PSD/School of Fashion Responsibilities: There remains a lack of comprehensive analysis addressing contemporary issues surrounding swimwear, particularly concerning diversity, inclusion, and social justice in the 21st century context. This position will conduct the first stage of research needed to develop a new and fully comprehensive fashion studies book on swimwear. The research assistant will gather and synthesize existing literature, identifying gaps in the current scholarship, and aiding in the organization of the extensive material to facilitate the writing process.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between SENS-UAW, Local 7902 and the University.

Work Activities:Conducting a literature review in the following academic areas: fashion studies, gender studies, political science, environmental science○ Write annotated bibliography○ Write summaries of main discussion points○ Refer to bibliographies and expand literature review accordingly
Gathering historical and contemporary primary source data on controversies surrounding swimwear and the legislation of bodies (men’s swim short bans in French public pools, Burkinis banned in Muslim countries, etc.)

Gaining first-hand experience developing a book proposal.

Hourly Rate: $30.16

Work Mode: Hybrid – Employees hired for this position primarily work remotely with the occasional on-campus presence required with advanced notice. Employees in this role will also be expected to use their best judgment to be on campus when necessary in order to best fulfill the responsibilities of their job descriptions. Minimum Qualifications: This role is tailored for graduate students pursuing studies in fashion-related fields such as fashion studies, fashion design, or fashion management. Additionally, students from disciplines like gender studies or programs focused on policy and politics with a keen interest in fashion may find this opportunity appealing. While prior experience is not required, a passion for research and an enthusiasm for exploring diverse perspectives are valued. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with research studies, ability to show examples of completed research papers.
