Fiber Broadband Research Intern

Position: Fiber Broadband Research Intern
Number of Position(s): 1
Duration: 10 Weeks
Date: June 2 - August 8, 2025
Location: Onsite, Murray Hill, New Jersey

The team you'll be part of

Nokia Bell Labs is building the future of human experience and our interns will have the opportunity to learn from and work with industry leading experts, who solve the most formidable challenges confronting our world through disruptive innovation and research.

You will join the Fixed Networks team, which has a proven record of inventing record-breaking access technologies and enriching Nokia’s product portfolio. Our team innovates on end-to-end system design as well as on building blocks of the physical layer of next-generation communication technologies, fixed-mobile convergence and new access system use cases by employing a range of skills including optical experimentation, digital signal processing, and opto-electronic hardware design.

Education Recommendations

Currently a candidate for a Master's or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field, preferably with an accredited school in the US.

A positive and open mindset and a strong drive to succeed

You will get exposed to:

Telecommunication systems and technologies Experimental lab setups and high-end test equipment Digital Signal Processing in the field of telecommunication (e.g., equalization, modulation, filtering, error correction, LMS algorithms)  Simulation tools and programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C/C++)

It would be nice if you also had:

Demonstrated early research results through journal papers or other industry recognition

As part of our team, you will:

Learn about Passive Optical Networks (PON), a cost-effective optical access technology that delivers broadband access to end-users.  Explore inventive ways to realize higher speed optical access networks to support the increasing bandwidth and stringent demands of future applications. Research topics of interest include optical experimentation to characterize novel components, simulation of new access architectures, the use of coherent and digital signal processing in PONs, applications based on artificial intelligence, error correction schemes, and new sub-system architectures.
