The purpose of this position is to advance the Department of Revenue’s mission to achieve compliance with Minnesota Tax Laws. Specialists in this position will provide service to internal and external customers necessary to determine proper compliance with all provisions of the Minnesota Cigarette, Tobacco, and Alcohol excise tax statutes. This position will serve in a leadership role with the Cigarette, Alcohol, and Tobacco (CAT) team. The successful candidate will lead and conduct field audit examinations, provide OJT training, and assist in policy development related to the cigarette, tobacco, and alcohol excise tax types, informational reports, and other associated tax information by applying appropriate tax law, policy, and procedures. These duties will consist of conducting field audit examinations, providing mentorship, public outreach, and training for their CAT Unit team members. The specialist will provide service and education to external and internal customers. This position requires substantial fieldwork and may require occasionally overnight travel. The candidate hired and new to this job classification may be eligible to receive a $5,000 hiring bonus! This bonus will be paid in two increments, with the first payment made after successfully passing the probationary period. A $1,000 Referral Bonus may be offered to Revenue staff that recruit new talent hired at Revenue, in this position. This position is eligible for telework to applicants who reside in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota. Telework eligibility is based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion. Commuting to the St. Paul office location for occasional in-person meetings is expected. **Minimum Qualifications** Three (3) years* of full-time professional experience in accounting or auditing *An Associate's Degree may substitute for 6 months of experience. Bachelor's degree may substitute one (1) year of experience; master's degree substitutes for eighteen (18) months of experience; PhD substitutes for twenty-four (24) months of experience. Applicants who meet the above experience requirements will be further evaluated based on the following: + Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices + Technical tax knowledge, including court rulings, regulations and administrative policies and procedures + Customer service and interpersonal skills sufficient to interact and negotiate with taxpayers and/or their representatives + Leadership skills and the ability to plan, direct, and review the work of others + Knowledge of personal computer operation and software programs used by the department in its internal and external operations + Communication and presentation skills + Knowledge of electronic processing accounting systems + Knowledge of electronic filing/processing systems + Skills in reading comprehension + Skill in problem-solving + Skill in analysis **Preferred Qualifications** + Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Business Management or other related business degree program + Knowledge conducting audit examinations related to the cigarette, tobacco, and alcohol excise taxes. + Knowledge conducting audit examinations. + Experience working with state statutes or rules in a regulatory environment. + Experience working in career fields involving direct customer service interactions with the public. + Experience working effectively both as a member of a team and independently. + Experience providing leadership for a project or team. **Physical Requirements** Requires occasional moving of articles such as boxes, accounting records, laptop computer, and portable printer. **Additional Requirements** Prior to an offer of employment, a background check will be conducted.
