Your Opportunity 

Stantec is looking for an Environmental Technician to join our Real Estate and Remediation team. This position will primarily work in the field on environmental construction related projects to complete pre-demolition building inspections for asbestos and hazardous materials and other environmental field work related to soil, soil vapor, and groundwater assessments and remediation.  Other responsibilities will include compliance with the Stantec health and safety program, managing data and writing environmental reports.

Your Key Responsibilities  Plan, prepare, coordinate, and complete field services. Conduct assessments for hazardous materials including (but not limited to) asbestos, mold, lead, PCBs and mercury. Obtain and maintain applicable asbestos, lead and other necessary training certificates. Collect samples for accurate logging on chain of custody documents and submission to independent laboratories for analysis. Perform and document field data collection activities (including oversight of subcontractors); Oversee site construction / corrective action activities. Perform ambient and personal air sampling. Conduct indoor and outdoor air quality assessments. Perform on-site microscopy analysis of air samples Support and conduct site assessments (Phase I ESA, Phase II ESA). Perform surface water, groundwater, soil, and soil vapor sampling. Assist with the operation and calibration of testing equipment. Assist in completion of technical reports. Actively participate in maintaining Stantec's safety culture Travel within Canada and the U.S. may be required. Travel to complete projects locally, regionally, and nationally, when necessary. Work extended hours and schedules to fit project demands when necessary. Preparation of health & safety plans, work plans, reports, and other technical documents. Review, communicate, and manage the project health and safety plan so that project personnel, client and subcontractors are aware of risks and hazards, and incidents are prevented. Coordination and oversight of subcontractors, including health and safety management. Control project tasks cost, schedule, and quality of work. Your Capabilities and Credentials  1-5 years of experience Strong verbal and written communication skills, including exceptional MS Office skills. Strong note-taking skills and attention to detail. Basic understanding of technical writing skills. Experienced at working well in a team atmosphere and independently as required. Working understanding of policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (as required). Working knowledge of field sampling techniques. Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work. Experience/knowledge of hazardous materials desirable. Conscientious, organized, and disciplined. Experience with microscopy (preferred, but not required). Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships within their technical team and Business Center. General construction and mechanical aptitude; Enjoy working outside year-round; Enjoy working at construction/demolition sites; Ability to climb ladders and lift 25 lbs; Growth mindset Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Strong analytical skills, and attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies. Effective verbal and written communication skills, with both clients and project team members. Ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet strict project deadlines.  Good driving record and valid driver’s license required. Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.   Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, or related field. 40-Hr HAZWOPER training Accreditation/License for asbestos inspector in the State of Minnesota

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Position will be a mix of field and office work. Must be able to lift equipment items and operate tools such as hammer drills, hand augers, and other field equipment. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Extended hours and schedules may be necessary to fit project demands.
