Job Description:
Summary:
The person in this position will be part of an innovative geotechnical engineering team with over 90 geotechnical engineers and field geologists. Barr’s geotechnical engineering team provides a wide array of services related to foundations, dams, embankments, landslides, soil-structure interaction, earth-retaining structures, excavations, and underground structures. We also offer geotechnical services for ground improvement, geotechnical modeling, instrumentation and monitoring, in-situ testing, geophysics, soil dynamics and earthquake engineering, geosynthetics, and groundwater and seepage. This position can be based in any of our U.S. offices and is open for a hybrid work arrangement. The work will involve frequent out-of-town assignments.
Key Responsibilities:
Drilling observation
Instrumentation installation and monitoring
Field investigation and contractor coordination
Geotechnical investigation cost estimate and proposal development
Surveying
Geotechnical construction observation
Preparation of drilling logs, geological maps, cross-sections, and technical reports
On-site investigation tasks such as classifying soil and rock samples, collecting samples for field screening and laboratory analysis, and field electrical resistivity testing
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in geology or related discipline
2+ years of related experience
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Strong technical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with project team members in a high-energy work environment that encourages self-initiative
A flexible working style and willingness to modify personal schedule when required to meet deadlines and client needs
Willingness and ability to regularly travel
Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more
Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future
Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
Academic coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above
Proven task or project management skills
Extensive construction materials testing experience
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Hibbing, Minnesota, office.
Compensation:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $69,000–$77,000/year. This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a “no retained earnings” model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Safety training will be provided.
