Field Services Technician
Title:  Field Services Technician  Location(s): Western Michigan   Position Summary:   The Field Services Technician an extension of the various Engineering, Installation & Construction groups in the field.   The Field Services Technician should be familiar with tools, equipment, standards, and deciphering technical documentation, to follow instructions to complete installations and assist with troubleshooting.  They should have hands-on experience in aerial and underground fiber construction for carrier-grade fiber networks as well as installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment.  This position includes construction and trouble management responsibilities for all aspects of physical fiber optic plant and electronics.   Primary Responsibilities:   Install and maintain various types of telecommunications equipment such as Cyan, Juniper, Accedian, Overture, Ceyna, Adtran OptiX/MX2800 series/908 series/TA series, Cisco ONS, various Cisco routers and switches, etc. Regular use of power tools and equipment related to installation and maintenance of network equipment. Work with AC and DC power in the capacity of installing equipment, as well as battery strings and rectifier units. Troubleshoot equipment including OTDR/Light Meter, TBERD, Ethernet Test Set, Toner, etc. IP networking Configure CPE equipment with use of templates. Navigation of a CLI and menu tree Prompt communication and updating of orders, tickets, documentation, etc. Work with other departments (such as NOC, Transport Engineering, Core, Service Delivery, etc.) to ensure customer is being supported from ‘start to finish’ and issues/concerns resolved in a timely matter. Escalate tickets appropriately, if needed. Support Level I and II Technicians plan to complete tasks in a way that minimizes network outages and maximizes customer uptime (i.e. 99.999 mentality). Support the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), update out-of-date procedures (as needed) and support efficiency efforts. Document and maintain detailed records of issues related to customer and equipment (including configuration and troubleshooting, resolution, etc.) Perform network site audits and recommend network changes and improvements. Communicate inventory and material needs to the Manager, Inside Plant for review and ordering, support with ordering (as needed). Manage multiple fiber plant construction projects to include overseeing permitting for your projects and construction activities and vendors as well as materials procurement organizations and partners. Perform pre-construction walk outs to determine most optimal fiber routes for customer laterals and backbone. Develop accurate Statement of Work (SOW) packages to include cost estimates and Outside and In-Building Fiber routes (primarily in CAD or Google Earth formats) Perform fiber optic and Ethernet line testing in relation to accepting newly installed plant or trouble repairs. Testing will include the use of OTDR and/or other similar Test Sets. Perform Post construction Quality Assurance of contractors work to ensure work is met to Standard Telecommunication Construction Standards and has met the Scope of Work requirements Availability to perform on-call work as prescribed to include after-hours (nights and weekends) call-outs Completes overnight maintenance activities and takes a turn in the on-call rotation 24/7 including some holidays. Requirements: 2+ years installing/troubleshooting Fiber Optic and Ethernet Physical transport in a service provider environment. Demonstrated ability to read and follow technical documents and update technical documentation per company standards. Safety 1st mindset with respect to safe work standards (including PPE, process, and procedures) Ability to scope and specify technical solutions to satisfy internal and external requirements. Ability to locate routes and assists in executing restoration in the event of a service interruption, proactively responds to potential problem areas in order to ensure integrity of the network 1+ years testing and delivering high speed telecom services using test units such as OTDR, Fusion Splicer, Power Meter, or other telecommunications test sets. 1+ years directly managing inside and outside plant construction projects, capital budgets, and contractors. 1+ years developing fiber routes for both outside placement and in-building placement Ability to work overtime and on-call rotation 24/7 including some holidays, as needed.   Preferred Qualifications: 1-2 years Relevant Experience; including: 1+ years of experience Installing/troubleshooting fiber optic and Ethernet transport/hardware in a service provider environment. 1+ years of experience working with customers and effectively resolving customer issues. 1+ years of previous work experience Installing and maintaining multiple types of telecommunications equipment such as Juniper, Accedian, Overture, Cyan, Adtran OptiX/MX2800 series/908 series/TA series, Cisco ONS, various Cisco routers and switches, etc. with some oversight. Experience installing and troubleshooting services at wireless towers. Basic cabling skills (Cat5-7, fiber jumper) DWDM, CWDM, ATM and Ethernet architecture experience Experience working in a datacenter or central office environment supporting fiber optic-based networks and devices. Current Fiber Optic (FOT) or BICSI Certifications (Installation and Testing) Previous experience using inside/outside plant topology software such as  3 GIS and  Salesforce.     Physical Requirements: Ability to work in all climates.
