Overview The Health Insurance Navigator is responsible for working with patients who express difficulty in paying for services, assisting patients with the Medical Assistance process, and identify patients for Fairview’s Charity Care program. This position works directly with medical staff, nursing, insurance carriers and ancillary departments to assist families in obtaining healthcare and financial services, as well as to determine and educate the patient of their financial liabilities and potential payment sources. Responsibilities Job Description - Accurate and timely screening of self-pay patients requesting an appointment with the Financial Assistance Navigation Team and/or self-pay patients identified through the HPE Workqueue - Timely and Accurate follow up with counties on MA Program applications performed - Expectation to cover hospital based locations during instances of extreme staffing outage. This may be done remotely but could come with an need for on-site coverage. Work with patients who express difficulty in paying and inform patients of their financial assistance options. Screen patients and process applications for Medical Assistance and other public assistance programs, while working with patients to ensure applications are completed. Determine whether patient has previous outstanding balances to incorporate in Medical Assistance application. Coordinate efforts within the Patient Access department to determine and educate the patient of their financial liabilities and determine possible payment alternatives. Review and resolve accounts that are complex and require a higher degree of expertise and critical thinking. Initiate the deferral process for all patients who are not financially cleared and who meet the deferral criteria per the deferral policy. Self-manage daily processing workload and prioritize patient accounts to accurately complete work in a timely, efficient manner to prevent service delays and payment issues. Screen and qualify patients for charity care using the established guidelines and ensure patients are properly instructed and educated on completing the application process. Qualifications Required Three or more years in a customer service role with 6 months to 1 year experience in hospital billing and follow-up experiences Preferred BA/BS degree Two or more years of in healthcare or insurance organization.
