Financial Counselor -2nd Shift - 32 hrs / week

Description:Position Summary: Under general supervision and according to established procedures, performs duties
associated with interviewing patients and assisting them with making suitable arrangements to meet their
financial obligations to Mercy Health Muskegon.

What the Financial Counselor will do:

Interview patients in person and over the telephone to obtain required financial information todetermine appropriate arrangements and/or program eligibility.Verifies Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance information, and have in depth conversation with a patient regarding benefit levels and how they apply to services rendered.Provides assistance to patients with estimate request.

What the Financial Counselor will need:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree preferred.One year of hospital billing and/or collection experience required or 1 year of experience in hospital insurance verification and collection processes in required in one or more of the following disciplines – Patient Billing/ Accounting, Accounts Receiveable Management, or Patient Access. Patient Access candidates needs to possess insurance verification experience with interpretation of medical benefits of multiple insurance plans. Ability to understand and utilize hospital computer software as well as third party online inquiry systems.Working knowledge and experience in the Medicaid application process. Working knowledge of commercial healthcare benefits, government programs and sources of financial aid available to patients, including strong knowledge of State, County and Federal Assistance Programs required.Interpersonal skills necessary to assertively establish patient financial arrangements and effectively provide education and financial counseling to patients and families in a courteous, diplomatic manner


Shifts: 2:30 -11:00p; Weekend rotation / every 3 weeks; weekends and holidays to be scheduled in accordance with CBA
