Financial Counselor East
*Description* Summary: The Financial Counselor is responsible for developing client relationships that will provide a "one touch" experience for primarily uninsured and underinsured patients as they go through the financial process from clearance to claim adjudication. The position requires a high degree of intellectual proficiency and critical thinking skills, as well as the ability to make appropriate decisions regarding situations of a complex nature. These decisions can have a significant financial impact on the Organization. Must be able to work both independently and as a productive member of a highly collaborative team. Reports to the Supervisor of Financial Counseling. Responsibilities: 1. Assists uninsured and underinsured patients with applying for State and Federal governmental assistance programs, as well as charitable assistance from the Organization. Helps patients gather all appropriate documentation and completes all necessary applications. Conducts interviews at bedside when feasible to ensure optimal customer service and personal attention. 2. Refers potentially qualified patients to the best source of financial assistance available based on the patient’s unique financial circumstance and future medical needs. This may include performing a complex analysis of the patient’s assets and financial liabilities. Must comprehend how the intricacies of the patient’s unique financial status relate to the regulations mandated by existing assistance programs. 3. Works in collaboration with Clinical Resource Management, providers, clinical departments, revenue cycle departments and the Insurance Verification Team to address patients’ financial needs and secures potential sources of funding. Collaborates expeditiously to ensure patients’ timely advancement through the continuum of care. 4. Performs insurance eligibility verification and executes payer requirements as needed. Includes initiating eligibility transactions via the internet, contacting the payer to obtain eligibility, benefits and billing information. Updates information to ensure that correct financial classification and information is on patients’ accounts. May discuss Medicare Lifetime Reserve days with patients or designated representatives. 5. Collects payments from patients, including prompt pay discounts and discusses payment arrangements. 6. Participates in the continuum of the life of a claim by working collaboratively with the collection departments to identify patients that may need assistance. Includes review and recommendation for bad debt based on historical patient information. 7. Stays abreast of ever changing laws and regulations mandating Medicaid eligibility. 8. Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position. Maintains a high level of ethical integrity while processing applications for government funding and other assistance programs. 9. Education: BACHELOR'S LVL DGRE Other Information: Required: Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 1year job-related experience, or an Associates Degree with 4 years job-related experience. Master’s Degree preferred. Basic MS Word & Excel. Customer service and organizational skills. Position requires a high degree of intellectual proficiency and critical thinking skills and the ability to make appropriate decisions regarding situations of a complex nature. Minimum Experience: one year. Desired: Bilingual in Spanish or Portuguese strongly preferred. National Association of Healthcare Access Mgmt (NAHAM) certification preferred.
