Incumbents are responsible for responding to calls for service for firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical care. REPORTING STRUCTURE: Receives general supervision from the assigned Fire Captain and higher-level supervisory or management staff. Typical Class Essential Duties 1. Responds to emergent and non-emergent calls for service; provides emergency medical care at a basic and advanced life support level; extinguishes fires; performs related life and property protection; and performs community risk reduction activities. 2. Ensures the proper condition, maintenance, and appearance of apparatus and equipment; prepares apparatus and equipment for immediate response. 3. Participates in training activities, including daily physical fitness training and on-going fire, rescue, and medical training. 4. Prepares reports, maintains logs of activities, and enters data into computer system. 5. Participates in the daily functions of the fire station, which may include housekeeping, cooking, and/or other related duties. 6. May drive emergency vehicles to respond to emergency calls from citizens, when acting as a Fire Engineer. 7. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. 8. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Knowledge (position requirements at entry): Knowledge of: • Basic math and science principles. • Emergency medical care. • Physical fitness principles. • Recordkeeping principles. • Basic principles of fire behavior, firefighting, and fire prevention. • Proper English, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar. • Modern office equipment and practices. Training, Experience & Certifications Training and Experience + High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) required. + Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire. + Associate's degree or equivalent college credits in fire science, public administration or a closely related field preferred. Licensing and Certification Requirements Licensing Requirements: + Possession of a valid Wyoming driver's license preferred. + Possession of or ability to obtain, a State Firefighter I & II Certification, within (12) months of hire. + Possession of a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification card at the time of hire. + Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Wyoming Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification within twelve (12) months of hire. If hired, Cas per Fire-EMS will cover tuition and book fees for EMT Certification training. Candidates who are already certified will receive preference. Supplemental Information & Physical Requirements Physical and Environmental Conditions: City of Casper employees that perform safety sensitive tasks are subject to pre-employment and/or random drug testing. These tasks include, but may not be limited to: • Emergency response/rescue • Handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste • Operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems • Maintaining City computer and data systems including networks, servers, communication systems, etc. • Driving for the City of Casper, whether essential or non-essential • Operating power-driven machinery or equipment • Handling confidential information, including personnel, health, financial, or attorney-client information • Working with or around children Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Incumbents in this position performs in activities responding to emergency scenes, disasters, or critical incidents; occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; exposed to outside weather conditions and wet and/or humid conditions; works in high, precarious places; exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration; noise levels in the work environment is usually moderate; however, the noise level is occasionally very loud due to sirens, etc.; wear protective apparel including goggles, hearing protectors, face protector, aprons, safety shoes, and self-contained breathing apparatus. The nature of duties involves constant mental and visual attention, and potential personal danger. Incumbents in this position will be in situations where they may experience critical/traumatic events and need to have the ability to quickly move between work spaces and/or facilities.
