Job Title: Firmware Designer

Job Description

Join our team as a Firmware Development Senior Engineer and help build a portfolio of energy products including solar inverters, home batteries, EV chargers, smart electrical panels, connected outlets, and smart lighting solutions. Our goal is to make homes fully electric, intelligent, and contribute positively to climate change. This role involves working in Richmond or Montreal offices 1-2 days a week, with a hybrid work setup.

ResponsibilitiesDevelop firmware for embedded applications using C programming language.Work on product development with microcontrollers running a Realtime Operating System (RTOS).Implement new features or fix issues in the existing codebase.Develop detailed requirements and specifications in collaboration with marketing managers, engineering project managers, and other technical innovators worldwide.Perform manual and automated bench testing during development.Follow established development guidelines and standards, recommending improvements as necessary.Develop features to meet technical requirements, including regional grid code compliance and functional safety.Write test plans and conduct design verification tests.Debug firmware issues identified by other teams.Write and maintain tools in Python to support firmware development.Provide mentorship to other team members.Essential Skills5+ years of hands-on experience in embedded firmware development.Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Electrical, Computer, or Mechatronic Engineering or related discipline.Demonstrable expertise in C programming language for embedded systems.Experience with CI/CD pipeline tools such as Github Actions, Jenkins, Docker, and CMAKE.Structured approach to troubleshooting and problem-solving.Proficiency in test-driven development (TDD) approach.Strong communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated collaborative teamwork capabilities.Experience in the full product lifecycle, from development through maintenance.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with PV and Grid Tie Energy Storage system architecture and application.Knowledge of RTOS constructs including threads, scheduling, synchronization, and memory management.Experience developing with an embedded RTOS like FreeRTOS, μC/OS, Neutrino, etc.Proficiency with Python.Experience in reviewing PCB schematics and microelectronic device datasheets.Experience with low-level board debugging using oscilloscopes, DMMs, function generators, etc.Experience with Test-driven development (e.g., jUnit, CppUTest).State machine design and implementation (e.g., Simulink Stateflow, QP/C Framework).Familiarity with industrial communication standards such as IEC61850, Modbus, LIN bus, CANbus/J1939, DNP3, or Ethernet/IP.Electronics background – understanding components like resistors and capacitors.Work Environment

This role offers a hybrid work environment with the potential for remote work. You will ramp up on sustaining work with plenty of new work planned, including developing new inverters. The new office is located in Richmond, and candidates are expected to go in every 2 weeks. The company has been cautious with COVID-19, maintaining a conservative stance on office work.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $52.00 - $85.00
