The Opportunity

The Firmware Engineer II position, at our Little Canada/St. Paul, MN location, will be responsible for designing firmware in electromechanical medical devices in Abbott’s Electrophysiology medical device division.  You will be part of our fast growing, and highly visible product development team focused on planning and delivering of custom in-house embedded software applications used in Electrophysiology labs.  We are looking for a detail-oriented engineer to apply engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solutions for technical problems.

What You’ll Work On

Participates in and supports the implementation, development, enhancements, and modifications to software, test, tool designs, cases, scripts, procedures, and/or code based on strategic analysis.Working from requirement specifications, develops, maintains, and updates detailed design and interface specificationsDebugs, troubleshoots, and isolates software problems as well as offers strategic solutions, analysis, and advice regarding identified issues for future developmentWrites, updates, and executes test design cases, as well as procedures and reports results.Contributes to and supports gathering, analyzing, and validating requirementsContributes to and supports root-cause analysis of failuresWorking from requirement specifications, develops, maintains, and updates test requirementsSupports implementation, enhancements, and modifications to test cases, procedures, scripts, and code.Presents at design reviews; documents and resolves issues as directed.Contributes to and supports reviews held by other engineers on related projects and provide useful feedbackEnsures compliance with procedural and documentation requirements of Abbott, FDA and ISO design controlsSupports and leads design reviewsSolves complex and diverse technical problems by applying sound judgment, creativity, appropriate data analysis, and technical expertise.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Software Engineering/Computer Engineering2+ years of development experience using C/C++ in an embedded environment for micro-controllers or linux systemsExperience with MS OfficeStrong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in related field (education may substitute for some years of experience)Experience with Embedded Software Development within the regulated medical field.Linux Kernel, Yocto and Qt development a plus.Software engineering experience within a rigid development and configuration management process.Experience with unit and integration level testing and automated testing.Experience in programming languages such as Python, Java, SQL, C/C++, C#, MatlabExperience of low-level real time system developmentExperience with cybersecurity for embedded devices (threat modeling/CSRA or digital signing preferred)Previous experience in cardiac electrophysiology and/or cardiac rhythm managementFamiliarity with IEC 62304 for medical device software, and IEC 60601 family of standards

The base pay for this position is $60,000.00 – $120,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
