Glimpse of the Job
The First Assistant Engineer (1AE) reports to the Chief Engineer and serves as the front line supervisor of the ship’s engineering staff. Leads the operation, maintenance and repair of the ship’s equipment and systems. The First Assistant engineer develops and maintains the operation, maintenance and repair plan utilizing the maintenance management application NSE (or other application if provided) and organizes operation, maintenance and repair based upon the maintenance plan and emergent priorities. The First Assistant Engineer reviews the operation, maintenance and repair plan with the Chief Engineer. The First Assistant Engineer participates in supervision and mentorship of engine license option student’s activities aboard the Training Ship to the extent that it does not interfere with the First Assistant Engineers primary responsibility of leading operation, maintenance and repair by the ships engineering staff. The First Assistant Engineer participates in training cruises and shipyard availability activities.

What you need to know
Salary: $160,160 annually. Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.
Physical Requirements: Must maintain USCG/STCW Medical Certificate.
Required Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Engineering or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
+ Three years experience as a 1st Assistant Engineer, two of which must be aboard a steam vessel of unlimited horsepower and one year aboard a diesel vessel of unlimited horsepower as 1st Assistant Engineer.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
+ United States Coast Guard License as 1st Assistant Engineer Motor Vessels of Unlimited Horsepower
+ United States Coast Guard License as 3rd Assistant Engineer Steam Vessels of Unlimited Horsepower,
+ STCW, USCG Medical Certificate, Universal Refrigeration Technician Certification.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Knowledge of shipboard equipment and systems including but not limited to steam propulsion, diesel electric propulsion, electric power systems including production, distribution, utilization and control. Automation, control, communication. Air conditioning systems, refrigeration systems, water makers including thermal distillation and reverse osmosis, oily water separators, oil content monitors. Hotel services including galley, berthing, marine sanitation, plumbing, ventilation.

+ USCG Endorsement as Electro Technical Officer.
Essential Tasks:
+ Engineering officer - Reports to the Chief Engineer and serves as the front line supervisor of the ship’s engineering staff. Leads the operation, maintenance and repair of the ship’s equipment and systems. Develops and maintains the operation, maintenance and repair plan utilizing the maintenance management application NSE (or other application if provided) and organizes operation, maintenance and repair based upon the maintenance plan and emergent priorities. Reviews the operation, maintenance and repair plan with the Chief Engineer. Is responsible for supervisory oversight of the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems. Participates in all underway periods, training sea terms, and shipyard periods. Prepares vessel for all drydockingand inspections.
+ Supervision - Participates in supervision and mentorship of engine license student’s activities aboard the Training Ship to the extent that it does not interfere with the First Assistant Engineers primary responsibility of leading operation, maintenance and repair by the ships engineering staff. Monitors and counsels work performance, conduct annual written performance assessments. Trains new engineers or relief engineers.
+ Inspections and Compliance - Ensures vessel systems and operations are in compliance with the requirements of the United States Coast Guard, American Bureau of Shipping and other governmental agencies and standard organizations. Requests supervisor assistance and guidance when necessary. Conducts inspections to ensure the crew is observes regulations and policy related to safe vessel operations.
Other Factors:
+ Must be on board during training cruises, shipyard periods, or any time the ship is away from Galveston.
+ This position is designated as Essential Staff under the TAMUG Emergency Operations Procedures.
+ Pre-employment and random testing for drugs and alcohol is required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99M1, 8.6.1) and USCG and DOT regulations.
+ Position is exempt from overtime. Duties may require you to work in excess of 40 hours per week but work hours shall not exceed Hours of Work prescribed by regulation.
+ Participation in TAMMA and TAMUG events is expected. Participation on TAMMA teams that inform Federal maritime training and education policy and rulemaking is expected.
