No County Jefferson Street Address Cape Vincent City Cape Vincent State NY Zip Code 13618 Duties Description Incumbent will be living and working on the NYSDEC Research Vessel Seth Green for extended periods of time (up to 10 days) including some weekends and overtime. They will be assisting in five approximately week-long surveys of fish communities using various gears including trawl and gill nets. The technician is responsible for learning standard operating procedures; retrieving and setting fishing or other sampling gear; processing catches including identifying, weighing and measuring fish; recording data quickly and accurately; and collecting and labeling biological samples. Other duties include assisting captain with general maintenance of research vessel, repairing fishing gear or other equipment; pressing fish scales, extracting and reading coded wire tags, extracting otoliths, and entering data. Other field and lab work may also be required as needed. Job includes travel per diem and may include overtime pay. Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography. Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2025, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.Must be able to work in remote areas.Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
