Fleet Manager

As the Fleet Manager at one of our Alaskan facilities, you will be responsible for working closely with all our Tenders and Fleet Operations. This position will help provide support and coordinate tender movement and placement to best facilitate the assigned area’s fleet. You are required to keep constant and effective communication with corporate management, fishermen and production staff to optimize buying capacity as well as ensure efficiency in offloading to receiving docks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

The responsibilities of the position include the following: 

Work closely with fleet department staff to professionally coordinate tender movements to effect efficient buying of fish and to ensure that SBS fisherman can maximize their fishing opportunity.  Ensure all vessels are operated and maintained with exceptional standards to ensure a safe seafood product. Facilitate in ordering parts and scheduling repairs for fleet tenders when necessary.  Keep daily records of the Tender Logbook, Buying Reports, Market Shares, and Charter days. Submit reports on daily, weekly, and seasonal requirements depending on the report.  Maintain a detailed and orderly inventory of scales and freight for fleet.  Supervise Fleet Expeditor and facilitate delivery of mail and packages from processing facility to fishing vessels.  Assist in coordinating and managing tenders; broadcast group messages to fleet as needed.  Actively monitor office communications through phones, radios, texts, and emails.  Assist with daily communication with ADF&G regarding fishing updates, announcement information, and overall strategy.  Other duties as assigned to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following functional and interpersonal competencies:      

Functional

Vessel Operations: Experience in vessel navigation, communication, and emergency procedures.Crew Management: Manage tender fleets effectively with experience in scheduling deliveries, training, and safety protocols.Fishery Management: Understanding of salmon fisheries in Alaska, including fishing seasons, quotas, and regulations with the ability to analyze fishing data and make informed decisions regarding fishing operations.Logistics and Supply Chain: Experience in coordinating vessel logistics, including fuel, supplies, and equipment. Including ability to manage the transportation and delivery of fish to processing facilities.

Interpersonal

Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate fishing crews effectively with strong decision-making and problem-solving skills. Ability to inspire confidence and build strong relationships with crew members.Communication: Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to effectively communicate with fishermen, vessel owners, processors, and regulatory agencies. This will require strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with other fleet managers, processors, and industry stakeholders. Foster a team-oriented environment within the fleet.Safety: Strong commitment to safety and ability to implement and enforce safety protocols. Requires being proactive in identifying and mitigating safety risks.Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing conditions. Must be flexible and willing to work long hours and irregular schedules.

Education and Experience  

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred but not required.  Minimum of 3-5 years in the seafood industry with experience in processing, fleet, and operations practices.   Basic computer skills of email, Microsoft Office, and Excel required. General knowledge of how to use a VHF radio for communication with fleet.   

Work Environment and Schedule 

Position requires onsite presence at our Alaska Processing Facility, and the ability to travel, spending a significant amount of time during the season at our various locations and processing facilities in Alaska.

While performing the essential function and job duties associated with the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
