Performs field service calls, troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems, coordinates work activities, and repairs hydraulic components. Environmental Factors Work is performed in a warehouse or workshop environment. Exposure to hazards including but not limited to welding fumes, extreme heat, trash, used syringes, electrical shocks, sharp objects. Physical Factors Heavy physical demands. Will be required to lift heavy tools and parts up to 45lbs, pull, climb, stand for long periods of time, lay down and kneel in confined areas with hazardous materials. Work Situation Factors Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies. This recruitment will be used to fill a Fleet Technician I position in the Utilities Department but may be used to fill other Fleet Technician I vacancies within the various maintenance shops Full-time; regular; non-exempt; union-represented This position is graded BC10. Duties and Responsibilities + Inspects, repairs, and maintains mechanical components on a variety of light/medium-diesel-powered and gasoline-powered equipment; operates a wide variety of hand tools and equipment to perform the necessary tasks of the job; demonstrates skill and safety measures. Has a basic understanding of electrical schematics. + Performs troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical systems and components; conducts research using manuals and other sources. + Conducts vehicle safety inspections, provides preventive maintenance, checks fluid levels, checks/adjusts brakes, changes oil, checks and services batteries and charging systems, checks and services cooling systems, and lubricates vehicles and equipment. + Performs repairs on hoses, vehicles, tire changes, and related activities; overhauls, maintains, and repairs engines, transmissions, and related components; reads and interprets manuals and documents relating to service and repair needs. + Performs field service calls to repair equipment, transports equipment to and from maintenance and repair shop. + Tests repaired, tuned, and overhauled vehicles and equipment; inspects, analyzes, and evaluates defective equipment; diagnoses malfunctions using manuals and hand tools and suggests appropriate care, repair, or maintenance procedures. + Communicates with operator to assist in diagnosis of equipment issues and failures to identify mechanical work. + Maintains maintenance data base schedule on vehicles and equipment; maintains up to date and accurate information on work provided. + Attends all technical services classes and programs ensuring that knowledge is up to date with new equipment, emergency safety, and service procedures. + May be required to utilize laptop or computer at workstation to receive, document, and track work orders or job tasks. As well as communicate with other personnel. + May install, diagnose, and repair various GPS, routing, camera, and onboard tablet systems in equipment. + May perform repairs on heating and cooling systems. + May be required to prepare vehicles and equipment for state inspections. Minimum Qualifications Associate degree or Automotive Trade School; AND two (2) years of automotive or mechanical experience required or four (4) years’ experience in a professional shop, with certificates for up-to-date technical classes attended. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. Licenses/Certification(s) Valid driver’s license is required. Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License required within one year of hire. ASE automotive- light truck certification (A Series) is preferred. If applicable, position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Gasoline and diesel diagnostic procedures and methods; operational characteristics of light and medium automotive and motorized equipment; operations and care of internal combustion engines; preventive maintenance procedures regarding light and medium vehicles and motorized equipment; methods and techniques of performing diagnostic and troubleshooting services; methods and materials used in welding and fabrication. Principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations related to the operations and functions of the position and services provided; current principles of record keeping and records management; principles and practices of effective research methods and data analysis, customer service, and problem resolution techniques; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
