The Climate Risk & Resilience Team at FM is seeking a creative, self-motivated individual for an internship in Norwood, MA. The intern will work under the supervision of senior staff and will have the opportunity to tackle real-world science and engineering challenges in the insurance industry. The project involves:

Cleaning past tornado loss dataLinking these losses to known tornadoes and tornado outbreak eventsCollecting available engineering information related to the lossesCreating a searchable GIS database

The internship is planned to last 3 to 6 months. By the end of the internship, the intern will gain experience in

Tornado researchInsurance lossesWind engineering Qualifications

We are looking for undergraduate students in good academic standing who wish to expand their research experience beyond academia.  Ideal candidates will have:

Attention to detailStrong analytical skillsGIS skills (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, GDAL)Experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, R, Python, and FORTRANExcellent written and verbal communication skillsComfort with writing shell scripts and using APIs to automate workflowsFamiliarity with both Microsoft Windows and Linux environments

This is an in-office role based in Norwood, MA.  Temporary relocation support provided for selected qualified candidate.
