Food Service Specialist

Job Description:

Food Service SpecialistIndependence, MissouriIn accordance with System Mission, Vision, Values and Goals, the Food Service Specialist provides menu, food preparation, and budgeting knowledge to the residential and day programs providing meals to our clients. Has an adequate understanding of regulations governing food preparation, storage and food service areas, completes the food purchasing for all residential programs and assists in food preparation in the program.

Essential Job Functions

Establishes and maintains working relationship with Harvesters. Ensures all residential/program kitchens meet Harvester’s requirements.Understands and adheres to all State, Federal, and program regulations, as well as permits regarding food safety regulations and food service standards.Coordinates and plans with clients and assigned dietician weekly/monthly menus with optimal nutrition for residential programs.Ensures safe and economic food preparation, which includes weighing and measuring ingredients, wrapping, date-labeling and storing food items. Cleaning and organizing work areas, equipment, utensils, and service station.Purchases food service supplies for program. Adheres to budgetary standards for each department. Conducts and maintains routine inventory system.Coordinates with people leaders and staff to ensure individual program needs are being met including individual dietary needs.Assists clients in the day to day meal planning (including holiday meals and special events), preparation, nutrition, safe food handling, food storage, safe utensil handling and general kitchen etiquette, as needed.Follows all System policies and procedures including emergency and corporate compliance policies/procedures 100% of the time.Other duties as assigned by Leadership.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and written.Ability to establish rapport in professional relationshipsCapable of organization/time managementThorough knowledge of food preparation and cooking methodsCapable of budgetingKnowledge of community resourcesCapable to follow security and safety regulations.

Experience and Education Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GEDPrevious food handling (prep/cooking), purchasing and menu experience in residential setting of 10 or more clients

Employment Requirements:

Must provide evidence that incumbent is free of infectious and contagious disease, such as TB, prior to beginning employment and annually thereafter – expected for all direct car staff, but mandatory for RCF staff. Successful completion of background check including criminal record, driving record and abuse/neglect. Completion of New Hire Orientation at the beginning of employment. All training requirements including Relias at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter. Current driver’s license, acceptable driving record and current auto insurance.Successful completion of First Aid training is required.Successful completion of ServSafe Course.Must have Food Manager’s PermitMust have Harvester’s CertificationMust have DOT Medical Card and Qualifying DOT Drug Screen.

Physical Requirements:

Heavy work: This job requires heavy physical work, involving exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. It also requires significant walking or standing, or sitting while using arm or leg controls, or working at a fast pace with constant pushing and pulling of materials, even if they are light. The employee must be able to stand, walk, sit, use their hands, reach, talk, hear, and have good vision, including close and distance vision. They should also be able to navigate stairs.
