Football Trending Reporter
The San Francisco Chronicle is looking for an ambitious and aggressive journalist to cover trending news, primarily focused on the 49ers and relevant NFL news -- with some attention to Cal and Stanford college football as well -- in a fast-paced, competitive market.
The job requires recognizing trends and audience needs, the ability to write quickly and accurately, the flexibility to write breaking news, in-depth analysis and features, and readiness to report off team practice, postgame and locker room availabilities. This reporter should be obsessed with the questions, trends and moments that connect with Bay Area football fans.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for football, and will be equally comfortable talking to players, coaches and executives on-site as they are with using data to report on player and team performance.
This reporter should be comfortable looking for trends, videos, the perspectives of fans and quickly be able to translate those moments for our digital audience. This reporter will focus on trending topics about the football players and teams in the Bay Area and collaborate with the 49ers beat reporter. This reporter will back up the beat reporters in live coverage.
What you will do:
• Work with our beat writers to break news in a competitive environment;
• Balance the demands of day-to-day reporting with the in-depth/unique content that will engage readers and drive subscriptions;
• Think differently on approach to covering pro sports. What was once a story could be a unique newsletter item.
What it will take to be successful:
• Track record of digital journalism that drives audiences
• Track record of working in a fast-paced breaking news/sports environment
• Understand audience analytics to help inform and shape coverage
• Comfortable reporting for social media and leading the social media conversation
• SEO best practices, including sharp headline writing
• Desire to experiment in reporting for TikTok and other social platforms
• Ability to write with clarity and authority
• Proficiency in AP style and grammar
• At least three years of reporting experience on a major college or pro beat
In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in California. The reasonable estimate is between $74,500 and $85,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in San Francisco. If this role is open to candidates outside of San Francisco, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
