This Forensic Science Examiner 3 will assist in directing staff and operations of the Controlled Substances, Chemistry, Toxicology and Breath Analysis units under the direction of the Section Manager. POSITION DETAILS This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. This position is onsite, Monday-Friday on first shift. As a general recruitment, the Forensic Science Examiner 3 will work within the Chemical Analysis Section which is comprised of the Controlled Substances, Chemistry, Toxicology and Breath Analysis units. In this role, you will conduct full-process examinations while working alongside lab professionals, forensic science examiners and will collaborate with law enforcement partners as needed. ABOUT US DESPP is committed to protecting and improving the quality of life for all by providing a broad range of public safety services, training, regulatory guidance and scientific services utilizing enforcement, prevention, education and state of the art science and technology. The Division of Scientific Services provides forensic support to local, state and federal agencies throughout Connecticut. This division is divided into three analytical sections. They are the Chemical Analysis section (including toxicology, controlled substances, and chemistry), the Forensic Biology/DNA section, and the Identification section (including computer crimes). The laboratory also has two non-analytical sections which include: the Quality section and the Laboratory Support Services section (including administration, evidence receiving, and case management). PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of Scientific Services, this class is accountable for supervising the activities and operations of a section engaged in selecting and conducting a variety of highly complex tests to analyze physical evidence. DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID (DNA) SECTION: Incumbents are responsible for supervising staff performing complex analysis of forensic biology evidence such as nuclear and mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). FORENSIC IDENTIFICATION SECTION: Incumbents are responsible for supervising staff performing complex analysis of evidence such as latent fingerprints, electronic/digital imagining, firearms, ballistics, toolmarks, questioned documents, imprints and investigating electronic related criminal activity. TOXICOLOGY SECTION: Incumbents are responsible for supervising staff performing complex analysis of forensic biology evidence such as trace, physical, chemical samples, autopsy specimens, body fluids, hairs, fibers and identification of suspected poisonous substances. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Eight (8) years of experience in forensic analysis of evidentiary material. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a lead capacity guiding the activities of professional forensic science laboratory personnel. NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Forensic Science Examiner 2. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED + College training in forensic science, applied genomics, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, molecular and cell biology or closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience required on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree. + A Master's degree in forensic science, applied genomics, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, molecular and cell biology or closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience. + A Ph.D. in forensic science, applied genomics, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, molecular and cell biology or closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS + Experience overseeing forensic Chemical Analysis Section (including Controlled Substances, Chemistry, Toxicology and Breath Analysis) staff; + Experience in training forensic Chemical Analysis Section (including Controlled Substances, Chemistry, Toxicology and Breath Analysis) analysts; + Experience with a Laboratory Information Management system; + Experience writing and editing forensic standard operating procedures associated with the forensic Chemical Analysis Section (including Controlled Substances, Chemistry, Toxicology and Breath Analysis). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS + Incumbents in this class may be required to work flexible hours. + Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
