Forestry Coordinator / Land Management Specialist

 FORESTRY COORDINATOR / LAND MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST

Please Note; You will be in the field approximately 75% of the time…With Occasional overnight travel required. 

This position has GPC “home office-based flexibility” within CENTRAL, Georgia (GA).

JOB SUMMARY 

The Land Management Specialist/Forestry Coordinator manages over 40,000 acres of Georgia Power Company (GPC/Company) owned land in Central and North Georgia, and is responsible for;

Managing GPC property to achieve Company conservation and revenue goals, while ensuring compliance with all State and Federal laws and regulations. Managing land leases, while protecting property rights and minimizing risk to the Company. Working collaboratively with internal and external partners to balance land use/land management objectives, optimize the value of GPC land assets, develop new strategies to increase revenue, and leverage technology to drive efficiencies. Maintaining external relationships with the Georgia Forestry Commission, Georgia Forestry Association, Society of American Foresters, GA Department of Natural Resources, Forest Landowners Association, Georgia Prescribed Fire Council, and other organizations. Participating in Southern Company / Georgia Power stewardship meetings and events. Supporting various activities including outdoor recreation, shoreline management, and fish & wildlife conservation programs.

JOB REQUIREMENTS 

Four-year degree in forestry and/or wildlife management is preferred. Four-year degree in a related natural resource or biological science field with coursework in forestry and/or wildlife management may be considered. Society of American Foresters Certification is preferred. Two years or more of relevant work experience is preferred.  Understanding of timber industry including local markets, competitive sales, bid processes, contractual agreements, etc. is required. Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills are required. Experience with forest and land management for conservation and/or wildlife habitat is strongly preferred. Experience with longleaf pine, hardwood, and/or wetland restoration is a plus. Two years of GIS experience is preferred. Use of GIS to manage forestry, real estate, and/or environmental/natural sciences work is a plus. Knowledge of and experience with Forestry Best Management Practices for Georgia. Certification (or ability to be certified) as a Prescribed Burn Manager through GFC is required. Experience with or certification as a drone operator is a plus. Ability to work both independently and on a team is required. Certification as a Pesticide Applicator through GA Department of Agriculture is preferred. Strong computer skills and willingness to adopt emerging technology is preferred. Strong time management skills (planning / prioritizing / scheduling / organizing) are required. Position requires; driving to and from sites, operating a truck or ATV/UTV off road, walking on uneven and steep terrain, working around prescribed fire, working outdoors in extreme temperatures/conditions and around potentially harmful wildlife and/or plants, working alone, occasional lifting, and working in or around water. Safely approaching every job, every day, always comes first. Occasional overnight travel required.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

Develop and implement annual workplan with budget requirements that includes managing timber sales, reforestation process, property access and boundaries, road construction and maintenance, compliance and risk management programs, etc.   Plan and implement conservation actions outlined in the Company conservation strategies. Routinely inspect properties and boundary lines in region and address issues/concerns. Manage hunting and agricultural leases. Support other Land Management programs and initiatives. Coordinate management of DNR-leased Wildlife Management Areas. Contribute to annual forestry revenue and longleaf management goals. Conduct prescribed burning for reforestation site preparation and habitat enhancement.  Manage contract resources. Collaborate with Land Management teammates to enhance business plans and procedures. Collaborate with Lake Resources team(s) on shoreline management activities including tree removal/replacement, invasive species control, etc. Collaborate with Generation and Environmental teams on forest management at/around Generation sites. Assist Real Estate Strategy & Support, Land Acquisition, and Land Engineering teams with property purchases, exchanges, sales, leases and donations.  Ensure the proper reporting of timber revenues and payment of associated timber taxes. Other duties as assigned.

This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle.  The following will be required if you are selected for this position:

Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license).  Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application. Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record
